Astm D 2073

This document provides a procedure for determining the amine value of a sample. It involves weighing a sample, dissolving it in glacial acetic acid, and titrating it with a standard solution of perchloric acid. The amine value is then calculated based on the volumes of perchloric acid used for the sample and a blank titration, along with the sample weight and normality of the perchloric acid solution.

ASTM D 2073

W X 1000

Normality of Per chloric acid = ------------------------

204.2 XV

where:
W = Potassium hydrogen phthalate used, gram
V = Volume of per chloric acid required to titrate the standard, ml
8.0 Procedure
Weigh accurately 0.8 gm of sample into the 250ml conical flask, add 25ml of glacial acetic acid. Stir well to get uniform
solution. Titrate the solution after adding 3 to 4 drops, of crystal violet indicator solution with standard 0.1N HCIO4 acid in
glacial acetic acid. The Color at the end point changes from violet green (note the volume V1). Perform a duplicate. Also
conduct a blank determination exactly as above omitting the sample (Note the volume V2).
8.1 Calculation
(V1-V2) x N x 56.1

Amine Value (mg of KOH/g) = ---------------------- , _

w

(V1-V2) x N
Amine Value (eq/kg) = ------
W

Where:
V1 = Volume of HClO4 consumed by Sample V2= Volume of HCIO4
consumed by Blank N= Normality of HCIO4
W= Weight of sample in gm
