we have speed to get things out of the south-east,”

“There’s a myth that needs clearing up, and that

ports have seen dramatic improvements as a result
of the infrastructure investment up to and beyond
the 2012 Olympic Games. We effectively have an

will see a complex urban highway along the A5036

£250-500m.
Mark Whitworth, chief executive of Peel Ports,
explains: “We welcome the Government’s financial
commitment to upgrading the road network in and

between the port and the motorway network.”
However, Peel is anxious to point out that the port
is already connected to other parts of the UK by 10
motorways within a 10-mile radius, numerous rail
connections and the Manchester Ship Canal.
Andy Martin, group land and property director at
Peel Ports, says the new infrastructure adds to the
port’s appeal. He predicts a series of lettings and
new built-to-suit developments. “We’re going to see
some significant investment both by Peel Ports and
our customers, both in warehousing at port locations
and in value-added activities like processing on the
quayside,” he says.
“In 2015 we expect to spend £15m on new
warehousing – so that is about 400,000 sq ft of

SHD LOGISTICS CONFERENCE | THE AGENDA HEADLINE SPONSOR

FACE-TO-FACE
This month we launch the first SHD Logistics Conference at the London Transport Museum.
Attend this event ahead of the evening Awards, on the 19th of March 2015, to find out how
companies like John Lewis and Stobart Group are delivering operational excellence.

THE AGENDA

Registration:
9.30 am – 10.00am Registration and cloakroom open to delegates. Tea and coffee available.
Welcome: 10.00am From the SHD Logistics team.
Key note
address: 10.10am John Passman, head of multi-channel distribution & infrastructure, Wm Morrison Supermarkets
An experienced campaigner in both Operations and Projects, John Passman was central to the planning and launch
of two major distribution centres at Sittingbourne and Bridgwater. The steady growth of Morrison’s online and
convenience store channels has called upon John and his team to build sustainable supply chain structures.
Headline sponsor
address: 10.40am James Sharples, managing director, Swisslog UK
James is the managing director of Swisslog’s UK business. He takes a ‘hands-on’ approach, keeping in close contact
with daily operations and meeting customers to ensure the reliability and availability of installed solutions.
SESSION 1:
11.00AM – 11.20AM MOVING TO AN OMNI-CHANNEL RETAIL MODEL: The story behind John Lewis’ move from a purely bricks
and mortar based retailer to one of the leaders within the omni-channel retail market.
Speaker: John Munnelly, head of operations, John Lewis
In this conference session, speaker John Munnelly will discuss the story behind the Automated National Distribution
Centre at Magna Park. John will offer conference delegates a chance to learn the company’s original design
objectives, and how the solution has matured and enabled the business to move from a purely bricks and mortar
based retailer to one of the leaders within the omni-channel retail market. This highly acclaimed development
which went live in 2009 is industry leading, enabling one pool of stock to be used for all shop deliveries and
customer fulfilment. A second warehouse has now been built alongside the current development and connected
via a link bridge forming a campus with an operating footprint in excess of 2 million sq ft.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS SESSION
SESSION 2:
11.20AM – 11.40AM GROUND-BREAKING LOGISTICS: Adapting and growing production capacity alongside customers.
Speaker: Ian Hepplewhite, senior projects manager, Vantec Europe
At the SHD Logistics Awards 2014, Vantec Europe won the ‘New Facility’ Award category, following its £21 million
investment in the North East’s largest pre-sale warehouse building to be built this century. In this seminar session,
Ian Hepplewhite talks us through this nine month design and build project, which consolidated Nissan products
from three existing warehouses, and incorporated Ian’s unique design ideas including inside drainage and a crack-
resistant floor. Ian will also discuss the challenges of project managing a second Vantec Europe facility, the build of
which will be underway at the time of the conference, and will be 2,000sq m larger than the above.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS SESSION
SESSION 3:
11.40AM – 12.00PM SUSTAINABLE LOGISTICS OPERATIONS: Reducing carbon by switching from lead-acid batteries to new
technologies including lithium-ion and anaerobic digestion.
Speaker: David Cooper, logistics manager, Barfoots of Botley
At the SHD Logistics Awards 2014, Barfoots of Botley won the Environment/Sustainability Award category, due
to its commitment to new carbon reduction technologies, including an anaerobic digester. In this session, logistics
manager David Cooper will discuss how the company has capitalised on the green energy from its own anaerobic
digester to utilise its vegetable waste. David will also discuss the benefits of introducing lithium-ion batteries into its
fleet, which include: space saving, safer manoeuvrability and a new charging cycle which complements existing
operations.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS SESSION
SESSION 4:
12.00PM – 12.20PM SAFE LOGISTICS OPERATIONS: Developing fork lift truck safety within a warehouse environment.
Speaker: Mark Jackson, logistics centre of excellence manager, Babcock International Devonport
At the SHD Logistics Awards 2014, Babcock International Devonport won the Safety Award category for its
proactive approach to reporting near-miss accidents and its development of mandatory seminars for staff. In this
session, Mark Jackson will provide perspective on some of the challenges logistics operations face, and how it
engaged with its workforce to formulate practicable solutions and develop its 21 Standards.

from city hubs to dark stores – does your property reflect your operational needs?
Speaker: Andy Gulliford, chief operating Officer, SEGRO
The supply of decent warehouse space has rarely been tighter. The good news is that the tight supply is
encouraging investors to spend money buying warehouses because scarcity means they ought to rise in value.
SEGRO is a leading owner, asset manager and developer of modern warehousing and light industrial properties,
with £4.5 billion of assets principally concentrated in London’s Western Corridor. In this session, Andy will discuss
and explore property options for the UK logistics industry, taking us from city hubs to dark stores, and discussing

MIXED FLEET AT SENIOR

One of the UK’s largest and most respected fenestration systems companies, Senior Architectural Systems, uses a mixed
fleet of Combilift forklifts at its manufacturing and warehousing facilities in Doncaster, each of which meets the various
handling and storage requirements on site.
The management at Doncaster needed not only solid dependable trucks for offloading incoming packs of raw materials
from HGVs, but also more compact forklifts able to manoeuvre material to the production facilities as well as a machine
that would enable space saving storage of stock such as finished profiles. Thanks to the wide range of models that
Combilift manufactures, Senior was able to source the ideal combination of trucks from the one supplier,
Senior’s purchasing manager Craig Turner says: “We can exploit every inch of space for very dense storage of stock.
Guide rollers on the trucks and the guided aisles between racking make it very quick and easy for drivers to steer down
the aisles, and this also reduces the risk of damage to both stock and racking.”
