Green computing aims to reduce the environmental impact of computers and associated devices. It involves designing technology that is energy efficient and uses fewer hazardous materials, as well as promoting reuse and recyclability. Key areas of research include making hardware and software more energy efficient. Standards like Energy Star have led to features like sleep mode that conserve power. Algorithm efficiency and power management settings also influence energy usage. Recycling electronics keeps toxic materials out of landfills and saves emissions from manufacturing new equipment. Teleworking can further reduce environmental impact through less travel.

Green computing refers to environmentally sustainable computing

The field of green computing are "the study and practice of designing, manufacturing, using, and
disposing of computers, servers, and associated subsystems—such as monitors, printers, storage
devices, and networking and communications systems—efficiently and effectively with minimal or no
impact on the environment.
The goals of green computing are similar to green chemistry; reduce the use of hazardous materials,
maximize energy efficiency during the product's lifetime, and promote the recyclability or
biodegradability of defunct products and factory waste.
Research continues into key areas such as making the use of computers as energy-efficient as possible,
and designing algorithms and systems for efficiency-related computer technologies.
In 1992, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency launched Energy Star, a voluntary labeling program
which is designed to promote and recognize energy-efficiency in monitors, climate control equipment,
and other technologies. This resulted in the widespread adoption of sleep mode among consumer
electronics. The term "green computing" was probably coined shortly after the Energy Star program
began; there are several USENET posts dating back to 1992 which use the term in this manner.

Algorithmic efficiency
The efficiency of algorithms has an impact on the amount of computer resources required for any given
computing function and there are many efficiency trade-offs in writing programs. As computers have
become more numerous and the cost of hardware has declined relative to the cost of energy, the
energy efficiency and environmental impact of computing systems and programs has received increased
attention.
Power management
The Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI), an open industry standard, allows an operating
system to directly control the power-saving aspects of its underlying hardware. This allows a system to
automatically turn off components such as monitors and hard drives after set periods of inactivity. In
addition, a system may hibernate, where most components (including the CPU and the system RAM) are
turned off.
Video card
A fast graphic processing unit may be the largest power consumer in a computer
Display
CRT monitors typically use more power than LCD monitors. They also contain significant amounts of
lead. LCD monitors typically use a cold-cathode fluorescent bulb to provide light for the display. Some
newer displays use an array of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in place of the fluorescent bulb, which
reduces the amount of electricity used by the display
Materials recycling
Recycling computing equipment can keep harmful materials such as lead, mercury, and hexavalent
chromium out of landfills, and can also replace equipment that otherwise would need to be
manufactured, saving further energy and emissions.
Telecommuting
Teleconferencing and telepresence technologies are often implemented in green computing initiatives.
The advantages are many; increased worker satisfaction, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions related
to travel, and increased profit margins as a result of lower overhead costs for office space, heat, lighting,
etc.

E- Waste

Environmental groups claim that the informal processing of electronic waste in developing countries
causes serious health and pollution problems. Some electronic scrap components, such as CRTs, contain
contaminants such as lead, cadmium, beryllium, mercury, and brominated flame retardants.

Recycling
Studies have consistently shown that electronic waste from devices like computers, mobile
phones and digital cameras contains toxins that are damaging to our environment. That is why
recycling is so important. When you recycle your computer, you are helping to keep toxic
elements out of landfills.

Recycling

Reuse: Ink cartridges can be refilled and alkaline batteries can be recharged rather than thrown
away.
Recycle: Most councils provide e-waste recycling services for large electronics.
Donation: Old electronics can be donated to a variety of schools or charities for reuse.

Takeback: Some electronic manufacturers and corporations offer low-cost or no-cost takeback

and recycling programs.

Greener Google Browsing

Some very novel ideas have been introduced to make the use of major search engines
contribute indirectly to the cause of keeping our planet green. For example, Blackle.com offers a
toned-down version of Google. This version uses a dark (almost black) background, which
means that by using a duller display, the users are reducing their consumption of electricity.

Greener FireFox Surfing

There has been a similar initiative taken for folks who surf by using FireFox. These users can
easily make their surfing hours greener by installing the new InferKnow application, which is
basically an add-on. It installs as an extension and when you surf with it, the cause of fighting
global warming gets a contribution.
