Step 1: Given Water Tank Capacity (V) : Dimension of Rectangular Tank

This document provides calculations to determine the impulsive hydrodynamic pressure on the walls of a rectangular water tank due to an earthquake. It gives the dimensions and properties of the tank and its supporting structure. It then calculates the impulsive mass, time period of impulsive mode, horizontal seismic coefficient, and lateral impulsive hydrodynamic pressure distribution on the tank walls in both the longer and shorter directions of the tank. The pressure is highest at the bottom of the wall and reduces linearly to zero at the top.

Step 1: Given

Water tank Capacity (V) = 600 m3

Dimension of Rectangular tank
Length (L) = 12 m
Width (B) = 9 m
Height (H) = 6 m
Let the height of Equivalent tank = h m
Volume of tank = L*B*h
or, 600 = 12 X 9 X h

Equivalent height (h) = 5.5555556 m

Properties of Concrete Staging
Weight of Empty tank = 2500 KN
Weight of the water in the tank = 6000 KN
Weight of the staging including both Column and
bracing = 1500 KN

Stiffness of staging in any direction (Ks) = 32000 KN/m

Step 2: Determine the structural Mass

Effective mass of staging is generally 1/3rd ot total staging mass

Effective mass of staging (mst) = 50000 kg

Effective mass of empty tank (mt) = 250000 kg

Structural Mass (m = mst +mt kg

= 300000 kg

Step 3: Determine the mass of the accelerating liquid

For impulsive ; Longer Direction
h/L = (5.55/12)
= 0.462963

L/h = 2.16
Total mass of water (m = 600000 kg

Impulsive Mass (mi) = 305890.71 kg

For impulsive ; Shorter direction
h/L = (5.55/9)
= 0.617284

L/h = 1.62
Total mass of water (m) = 600000 kg

Impulsive Mass (mi = 378915.91 kg

Step 4: Determine the Time period for the impulsive mode

As per clause 4.3.1.3 of IS 1893:2014(part II)

In Longer Direction Ti = 0.865 sec

In Shorter Direction Ti = 0.915 sec

Step 5 : Determine the Horizontal Seismic Coefficient (Ah)

For impulsive ;
Zone factor = 0.24
Imortance factor = 1.5
Resposne reduction factor = 4
Soil Type = Hard

For Ti= 0.864573708479268 5% damping

For longer direction Sa/g = 1/T

= 1.15663938
For Shorter direction Sa/g = 1/T
= 1.09266524
Horizontal Seismic Coefficient for Impulsive mode with 5% damping
Ahi =(𝑍 𝐼
𝑆𝑎)/(2 𝑅 𝑔)

For longer direction (Ah)i = 0.05204877

For Shorter direction (Ah)i = 0.04916994

Step 6: Lateral Impulsive Hydrodynamic pressure on the wall

As per clause 4.9.1 of IS 1893:2014 part (II)

Lateral hydrodynamic impulsive pressure on the wall is given by
