Gray is going away—kind of

At paint stores, while my paint is in the shaker, I’ve been asking the staff about color
trends. One thing is certain: Gray tones, which have been the most popular for years, still
lead—by far. But interior designers seem to be steering away from cool grays. So what’s
the next trend? No strong consensus on that, but the most common guess points to warm
neutral colors like beiges, tans and warmer grays.

No-Soap Kitchen Cleanup
O
n one of her visits to see the grandkids, my mom bought my
wife and me this Kitchen Dynamo ($8) by E-Cloth. This
“spongelike” cloth is a big upgrade from what we were
using. E-cloth claims that the cloth cleans with no soap because
when wet, its microfibers become “charged,” causing dirt, grease
and grime to stick to the cloth for easier cleanup. I have no way of
confirming whether that’s how it works, but it definitely wipes up
better than a rag or a sponge. For any disbelievers out there, the
Kitchen Dynamo works just fine with dish soap too. After Mom’s
visit, we decided to buy two more. To see the entire line of cleaning
products, go to e-cloth.com.

TO SET NAILS
I’ve used Spring Tools nail sets for years. Using them
is far better than setting a nail with a hammer and
nail set. Simply pull back on the spring, then release
and it drives the nail beyond flush, ready for you to
fill it before painting or finishing. The Spring Tools
hinge-pin tool works in the same manner and is the
best way I know to knock stubborn pins out of door
hinges. Because of the tools’ popularity with pro

Meet the Watch That Shook
Wear it today
Up Switzerland for only
A watch that revolutionized timekeeping
at a price equally as radical.
$39
I n the history of timepieces, few moments are more important
than the creation of the world’s first Piezo timepiece. First released
to the public in 1969, the watch turned the entire industry on
its head, ushering in a new era of timekeeping. It’s this legacy
that we’re honoring with the Timemaster Watch, available
only through Stauer at a price only we can offer.
Prior to Piezo watches, gravity-driven Swiss watches were
the standard bearer of precision timekeeping. But all that
changed when the first commercially available Piezo
watch came onto the market.
The result of ten years of research and development
by some of the world’s top engineers, they discovered
that when you squeeze a certain type of crystal, it
generates a tiny electric current. And, if you pass
electricity through the crystal, it vibrates at a precise
frequency–exactly 32,768 times each second. When
it came on the market, the Piezo watch was the most
dependable timepiece available, accurate to 0.2 seconds
per day. Today, it’s still considered a spectacular
advance in electrical engineering.

[ “It was like a magnum bullet shot at the most sensitive

spot of the mechanical watch industry... Switzerland
was terrified.” —Ariel Adams of A Blog to Watch.
With the Timemaster we’ve set one of the world’s
most important mechanical advances inside a decidedly
masculine case. A handsome prodigy in rich leather and
gold-finished stainless steel. The simplicity of the watch’s
case belies an ornately detailed dial, which reflects the
prestige of this timepiece.
Call today to secure your own marvel of timekeeping
history. Because we work directly with our own craftsman we’re
able to offer the Timemaster at a fraction of the price that many
Piezo watches cost. But a watch like this doesn’t come along every
day. Call today before time runs out and they’re gone.
Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. Spend some time with this
engineering masterpiece for one month. If you’re not convinced
you got excellence for less, simply send it back within 30 days
for a refund of the item price. But we’re betting this timekeeping
pioneer is a keeper.

Tested: Leak
sensors that
send alerts
A water leak in your home could mean
thousands of dollars in damage and
repairs. No one wants to come home
from vacation to that. That’s why it’s
critical to be alerted to a leak as soon
as possible. Smart water leak sensors
will sound an alarm when there’s a
leak, and send a notification to your
smartphone if you’re away from the
house, giving you time to stop the leak
before it wreaks havoc.
But how well do these sensors really
work? Are they worth the cost? To find
out, I tested the Zircon WiFi Leak Alert
($40) and SimpleSence Water Leak and
Freeze Detector ($70), available at
home centers and online. Here’s how
the two sensors compared in our test.

Audible alarm test

How loud are these alarms? I put both
in my basement, poured water to trig-
ger the alarm, and then went upstairs
to the farthest point in my house to see
if I could still hear the alarm. The Zircon
model is loud, almost ear piercing, and
I could definitely hear it wherever I
went in the house (my neighbors prob-
ably heard it too!). SimpleSence, on
the other hand, had a weak audible
alarm that was not perceptible from
the first floor.

Notifications test
The smartphone notification is what
makes these detectors great. Both
performed that function very well.
Zircon sends notifications via email,
while SimpleSence uses both email
and text. I did several tests to see how
long it would take each unit to detect
water and send a notification. Zircon
detected water about 10 to 15 sec-
onds faster than SimpleSence. But
since texts are faster than email, I
received notifications from
SIMPLESENCE ZIRCON LEAK ALERT SimpleSence a few seconds sooner.

• Easy setup • Price tie, neither brand is clearly superior. If
• User-friendly app • Fast leak detection cost and alarm loudness matter most
• Two-year battery life CONS: to you, Zircon is the winner by far. If
CONS: • Difficult setup you want a dedicated app and easy
• Weak audible alarm • No app; no text notification setup, you’ll prefer SimpleSence.

athrooms are
often high on the
renovation wish
list. But if you’re like
me, the thought of
demolishing your
bathroom and putting
it out of commission
keeps you from taking
the plunge. To avoid
that, I dreamed up
ways to get big
upgrades in less time
and with less mess!

4 FANCY FEATURES
I was able to add these features to the
bathroom inside the drop ceiling. This
would also be a great space for a heater
or even speakers.

LIGHTED BATH FAN

A slim-fit fan allowed me to main-
tain enough ceiling height and
use 2x6s for the ceiling frame.
This Aero Pure fan includes an
LED light ($145).

RAINFALL SHOWER
The epitome of luxury in a bathroom
is an overhead shower (see p. 10).
The plumbing is easy to run down
the wall; all you need is a hole big
enough for the pipe.

LED ACCENT LIGHTS

These 12-volt dimmable LED light
strips can be cut to any length and
are easy to wire together. Most
important, they’re rated for damp
areas like a shower. Made by various
manufacturers, a 16-ft. strip costs
about $37. The lights are powered
by a switch that has a built-in trans-
former to convert 120-volt power to
the 12 volts needed for the LED light
strips. Made by Kichler, the switch
costs about $150.

3-WAY SHOWER VALVE

This Grohe Grohtherm SmartControl
valve ($475) lets you use the
shower wand, tub spout and rain-
fall showerhead all at the same
time, individually or in any combi-
nation of the three.

I bought a frameless beveled
mirror for $125. I could have
purchased a framed mirror to
save some work, but I decided
to build my own frame. The
mirror is heavy, so I wanted the
frame to be solid lumber for
strength. I also needed it to be
thick enough for 3/4-in. screws
to attach the drawer slides.
I chose 1x4 poplar boards.
Poplar is easy to find, inexpen-
sive and lightweight. It also has
good screw-holding capability
and takes paint well. For the
cabinet, I used precut melamine
shelving from the home center.
Its front edge is already banded,
so if you plan your cuts, you won’t
need to edge-band your shelves.

and one down. If there are pipes or
electrical cables in your way, you
can choose a different stud cavity,
size the cabinet so it doesn’t inter-
fere, or reroute the pipes or wires.

If you pick a different location, you
can easily patch the small slot.

b CUT THE OPENING

Starting from the slot, cut a
hole large enough to reveal the
exact stud locations. Draw the
opening using a level and a fram-
ing square, and then cut on the line.

JOINTS
Cut the frame parts (G and H) to
length, then make half-lap joints at
their ends. I cut half-laps using a
dado set on my table saw. I attach a
long fence to the miter gauge, and
then add a stop block to set the
joint’s shoulder. Start with two
scrap pieces, making passes in
both until you get the right depth.

b CHAMFER
THE JOINTS
Add a very slight chamfer to the
shoulders of the joints on the side
pieces, and on the entire inner edge

8 of the top and bottom. This creates

a shallow “V” where the joints come
together. The groove is optional
but adds some visual interest. I like

sanding block works fine.

bASSEMBLE
THE FRAME
Glue the half-lap joints, and then
clamp them until the glue dries.
Set the frame on blocks or saw-
horses to provide room for the
clamp heads. Because of their
ample gluing surface, these half-
lap joints are super strong.

b APPLY SAFETY
BACKER
This mirror will be in motion regu-
larly, so I applied transparent
window safety film ($15 for an
18-in. x 8-ft. roll online) on the back.

15 In case of breakage, the glass shards

won’t crash to the floor. Just peel
the backing and press the film onto
the back of the mirror. Since this
isn’t a window, I wasn’t picky about
removing every last air bubble.

15b INSTALL
THE MIRROR
It’s easier to hang the frame by
itself, without the added weight, so
I installed the mirror last. Apply a
bead of silicone in the rabbet, and
then carefully place the mirror in
the silicone. Let the silicone set for
a day and then trim off any excess
with a razor blade before hanging
the mirror.

Replace your P-trap

Make space under the sink by taking out the P-trap. Reusing an old P-trap
can be a messy ordeal, so Joe usually includes a new trap assembly on his
installs. The cost of a plastic P-trap kit is less than $5, and you’ll get peace
of mind knowing all those fittings are new and clean. Keep in
mind that most bath sink drains are 1-1/4 in., and
kitchen sink drains 1-1/2 in. Joe sees a new

Install the faucet first
If you’re installing a new sink, mount the faucet to the sink
before dropping the sink into place. Having everything in
plain view always makes for better connections—and the less
time you spend on your back under that sink, the better.

TEST THE SHUTOFFS

Almost every faucet is connected to shutoff valves beneath the
sink. But those old valves often don’t work, and it’s best to
know that before you begin. If your shutoffs don’t stop the
water flow, you can repair them or replace them. Or you could
turn off the water to the whole house at the main shutoff valve
while you replace the faucet. For help with those jobs, search
for “shutoff” at familyhandyman.com.

Clean off your sink deck

To ensure a good seal between the sink and
the new faucet, be sure to clean up the foot-
print of the old faucet. Scouring powder
works well for soap scum and crud. For

Use plumber’s putty pumice stone is the best remedy.
Some manufacturers suggest using sili-

beware: It can be difficult to apply and

and the non-staining variety won’t leave Pumice
blemishes. He also says it’s far easier to stone

installed with putty. Silicone is as much
an adhesive as it is a sealant and can
make pulling things apart a pain.

INTO THE ATTIC:
Terminating the duct in
the attic is surprisingly
common—and harmful.
Moist air will condense
on framing and sheath-
ing, forming ice or water
that will support rot and
mold or damage the
rooms below.
Solution: Extend the
duct to vent the air out-
side before major
damage occurs!

QDUCT IN VENTED
SOFFIT:
It’s OK to run a duct out-
side through a soffit—
unless the soffit contains
inlets for roof venting. In
that case, moist air
coming out can reenter
the attic through soffit
vents; the effect is similar
to venting directly into
the attic.
Solution: If you have
vented soffits, you’ll have
to run the duct outside
through the roof. To see

LASER-WELDED CORING BIT about $50 online.
Josh uses laser-welded diamond
coring bits ($70 and up) to drill
holes in tile. A laser-welded dia-
mond coating is more durable than
a coating made from braze-welded
diamonds and can cut wet or dry.

SILICONE FLOATS
Josh prefers soft silicone grout floats
to hard ones. They conform to rough
surfaces without having to be pressed
down as much. You can get them for
about $10 at a home center.

LEVELING WEDGES
AND SHIMS
These wedges and
shims help you set
tiles evenly and avoid
uneven tile edges,
called “lippage.”
They’re available at
most home centers
and all tile stores. TROWELS WITH
ROUNDED NOTCHES
Rounded ridges in
thin-set collapse more
uniformly for better
coverage and fewer air
pockets. That makes for
a better bond.

CHINA PENCIL
Josh uses china pencils
to mark tile cuts. The
marks are easy to see,
and they won’t rinse off
if you’re using a wet saw.

LET THE THIN-SET SLAKE
After the thin-set is initially mixed, it’s important to
let it sit long enough to absorb all the water. This
is called slaking. Remix the thin-set after letting it
slake for about 10 minutes, adding a little water if
needed until it’s the consistency of peanut butter.
Play the same waiting game when you’re mixing
the grout later.

GUIDE BOARDS BEAT CHALK LINES

The usual way to position the first row of tile is to snap chalk lines. But
there are two problems with that method: First, chalk lines are hard to
see if you’ve slopped thin-set over them. Second, the first row of tile can
move as you set the next row. Guide boards solve both problems. Position
the boards the same way you would position layout lines and screw them
to the floor. Choose perfectly straight boards or strips of plywood, and
wrap the edge of the guide with duct tape so the thin-set won’t stick to it.

Carpet
deodorizers
can kill your
vacuum
Many carpet deodorizers contain
baking soda because it’s a good
odor absorber. But a vacuum
repair technician tells us that
baking soda is harmful to your
carpet as well as to your vacuum’s
performance and longevity.
Here’s how it can damage your
carpet and your vacuum:
Q Baking soda particles, which are
abrasive, work their way under the
carpet where your vacuum can’t
suck them out. In heavy traffic
areas, the resulting abrasion
breaks down the carpet backing.
Q Baking soda gets into the
vacuum’s motor, gears and bear-
ings, gradually destroying them.
Q Baking soda can quickly clog a
vacuum cleaner filter. A clogged
filter makes the vacuum work
harder, wearing it out much sooner.

Better solutions
To remove odors, you need to clean
them out, and baking soda doesn’t
clean. You wouldn’t sprinkle baking
soda on your clothes, vacuum it off
and call them clean. Cleaning
involves a carpet cleaning machine,
liquid carpet cleaner and water.

Avoid a ceiling
fan disaster
Years ago, a spinning ceiling fan crashed to the floor, missing my 2-year-

was just a stern reminder to take ceiling fan installation seriously. It’s a
common mistake to think that any round junction box is fine for a ceiling Pressure

meant to support the weight and vibration of a ceiling fan, and a falling
ceiling fan is no joke.
So, when you’re installing a ceiling fan, know how much it weighs and
install a junction box rated for a ceiling fan of that weight. These boxes are
marked by the manufacturer as approved for fans and typically support a
fan weighing up to 70 lbs. Several varieties are available for both new con-
struction and retrofits. They cost $3 to $15 at home centers.

Protect Your Battery in the Off-Season

Storing a seasonal-use battery—say, for a boat or an RV—is simple, but here are a few things to keep in mind:
Q Before storing, check and refill water levels as needed.
Q Fully charge the battery before storing.
Q Freezing a battery damages it irreparably, so store the battery indoors, in a warm location.
Q Heat can also harm a battery, so don’t store it near any heat sources such as radiators or space heaters.
Q Contrary to popular belief, storing a battery on concrete is perfectly fine. The materials used in modern
batteries make possible moisture take-up from concrete a nonissue.
Q Hook up a battery maintainer to keep your battery charged.
Q Check the battery once a month to be sure it’s fully charged.
Q Make sure the battery is fully charged before putting it back into use.
