SECTION "B"
Attempt ALL questions.
1. Explain in brief the following factors for product design and development [4]
a) Product identification b) Marketing
c) Distribution d) Finance
2. Why marketing mix is important in production planning and control. [3]

Demand 78 65 90 71 80 101 84 60 73
5. An item is used at a uniform rate of 50,000 units per year. No shortage is allowed, and
delivery is at an infinite rate. The ordering, receiving and hauling cost is Rs. 13 per order,
while inspection cost is Rs. 12 per order. Interest costs Rs. 0.056 and, deterioration and
obsolescence cost Rs. 0.004 respectively per year for each item actually held in inventory
plus Rs. 0.02 per year unit based on the maximum number of units in inventory.
Calculate the economic order quantity. If lead time is 20 days, find re-order level. [6]
6. Two major parts P1 and P2 for a product require processing through six machine centers.
The technological sequence of these parts on the six machines and the manufacturing
times on each machine are: [6]
P1 Machine C A E F D B
Sequence
Time 2 3 4 5 6 1
(Hours)
P2 Machine B A E F C D
Sequence
Time 3 2 5 3 2 3
(Hours)
Use graphical method to obtain the total minimum elapsed time.
8. A machine operator has to perform three operations: turn, thread and grind on a number
of different jobs. The time required to perform these operations (in min.) for each job is
shown below. Find an optimal sequence that will minimize the total elapsed time. Also
determine the total time required to complete all the jobs and total idle time for all the
machines. [8]
Job Time for turning Time for threading Time for grinding
