1.The protagonist has an unusual name. Why do you think it is spelled that way?
-The protagonist name is spelled that way maybe because it is auto corrected in the computer
and it corresponds the girl’s attitude and behavior.
2.How would you describe the other mother? Why do you feel that way?
-The other mother is tall and slender with a long fingers and short hair that floats in the air. She
has black button eyes that looks creepy. She pretends to be the good mother but turns out that
she only wanted to trap children in her own world where she steals the soul, hearts and
memories from them. In short, she is a monster.
3.Why does the other mother have significant differences in appearance from her real mother?
What could this mean?
-You can pretend to be good or bad but you can’t hide the truth about yourself. Someone will
bring out the true color of yourself. Maybe, we can pretend but still it can’t win against the truth.
4.How do you feel about the button eyes? What could this signify in the story?
-The button eyes are significant because those eyes take away Coraline’s sight, and her
blindness is needed because the other mother want to make things their way it looks. Coraline
becomes a puppet, which enables her handler, to take her soul.
5.Have you ever fantasized about having another mother or father? Why?
-Yes, because when I was a child I wanted to have a family that doesn’t have a fight. The first
time I watched this movie, all my fantasies about having other parents are gone.
6.How does the story feed on this fantasy?
-Some events and characters are fantasy and can never happen in life. There’s no such thing
as portal to the other world. No such thing that your parents have look alike unless they have
identical twins.
7.How is the chicken in the other family different from how the chicken is usually served in her
household?
-The other chicken in the other world is tasty and delicious, also eye-appealing. It is way
different from her real family, tasteless and pale-looking.
8.What does the chicken symbolize?
-The chicken symbolizes the start of getting Coraline’s attention to live in the other world.
9.The other mother encourages Coraline to play with rats. What does this tell us about the other
mother’s character?
-Because the real mother doesn’t let Coraline play with rats, the other mother took advantage to
Coraline’s wants. Hence, the other mother intention is to keep Coraline forever in her world.
10.Why does Coraline respond the way she does?
-Coraline wanted the attention and time of her parents. She wanted to have a caring and loving
parent the way she wanted. She wanted to have bond with them.
The Waiting
1.What did you feel after reading the story? Why did you feel that way?
-I felt sad after reading the story because thinking of it makes me feel lucky of not having a
parent like Miguel’s that concentrated on their work and almost forgot about their child.
2.The title of the page is “Waiting” what are they waiting for? Why is this ironic?
-Miguel is waiting for his parents to come home.
3.There is just a position of tuna salad with all of the Filipino dishes. Why? What does it mean?
-There is a comparison between tuna and salad with all of the Filipino dishes and other country.
4. Where you surprised the kind of food Miguel had eat once he got to Canada? Why? How is
this different from your expectation?
-No, because as expected from a movies or films in Canada, I have seen many dishes that
looks the same as the Filipino dishes.
5.How do you feel toward Roberto? Why did Roberto do what he did?
-I felt disappointment in what Roberto did. He shouldn’t have found another woman while Isabel
is busy on her work and doesn’t even have time with them. Well, maybe Roberto just wanted
someone to be with while his wife is away.
6.After saying "sakripisyo" why does Isabel say "Blessed" are the poor for theirs is the kingdom
of heaven? What is in about this particular scene that is uniquely Filipino?
-The poor have much bigger believe in God. They know how to pray. They butcher pig as a
sacrifice or thankfulness on what they have.

8.How do you feel toward Miguel why do you feel that way?
-Knowing the story of Miguel, I felt sad towards him. We can say that they, maybe, rich but
doesn’t even have time to have a family day because of her mother being busy to provide their
needs.
9.What does Miguel want? Can Isabel ever give it to him? Why or why not?
- Miguel wants his family to get together. But Isabel can’t give it to him. Because Isabel wants to
put her work first, earning more money for Miguel's future.
10.Why is Miguel being difficult? It is just because he's teenager? Explain your answer
-Miguel is being difficult because of the things he wanted can’t come true. Maybe, because he’s
only a teenager but it doesn’t feel that way.
