Personal Philosophy of Education

I chose to pursue the profession of teaching because I want to help every single student reach

their fullest potential. I get to somewhat work towards my goal currently as I am a resource teacher in a

preschool setting. While I think that the experiences I am gaining now will help me in the future as an

educator, I feel like my every day experiences does not represent what my career has in store in the future

mainly due to the age differences between my current students, which are anywhere between 6 months to

5 years old, and my future students, which would consist of students who will be a little older.

Additionally, I am not currently responsible for any one classroom as I float around based on which class

needs me that day. During the duration of this class, I have had the opportunity to see an elementary

teacher at work from the perspective of an observer rather than the student. I think this opportunity was

especially valuable as I got to see the “behind the scenes” of teaching an elementary class, which is much

different from my current preschool classes. My assigned teacher has provided me with many insights

about the ups and downs about teaching and about our immediate school system, which I feel like is

judged harshly by the general public due to the lack of understanding from those that are not closely

involved.

My current beliefs about education is that every student should have an equal opportunity to

discover their potential and they should be given the knowledge and resources to fulfil it. There has been

many efforts though-out the recent years that has helped my philosophy become easier to make into

reality, including laws that promote race and gender quality in schools, laws that has incorporated more

opportunities for students in special education to receive the best education available based on their

needs, laws that has allocated more resources for students that live in poverty, etc.
One teaching strategy that I have recently discover in this class is the use of different

teaching mediums and different ways for assessments to appeal to students with different

learning styles such as visual tools, audio tools, tactile strategies, etc. I feel like it is an important

step in implementing my personal philosophy of helping students reach their potential by helping

them find the medium that makes it easiest for them to learn. I also feel like it is a great way to

be inclusive in the classroom as I am considering students with different needs. Every student is

different, so it is important to meet every students’ needs so that every student is engaged in

every lesson.

I still have a lot to learn and a lot to discover when it comes to teaching. As of right now, I think

that most important trait for me to maintain is adaptability. We are in uncertain times. Our teacher force is

going from teaching in class, to teaching online inside their class, to teaching 100% at home. It is more

important now than ever to be able to keep up with the current situation as it could change at any moment.

If it is difficult for our teachers, it is more difficult for our students. As I am approaching the end of my

Associate’s degree in Elementary Education, my plan is to continue my education to obtain my

Bachelor’s degree in order to become licensed as a fulltime teacher. In the meantime, I plan on staying in

my current position as a resource teacher until I graduate and relocate, which then I would consider

becoming a substitute teacher to expand my experiences.
