PLATE LOAD TEST METHODOLOGY
For
Construction of EPV Thakurgaon 115MW HFO Power Project.
(ASTM- D 1196 will be followed)

APPARATUS

Loading Device:

A load platform will be built on two to Five I-beam supported on wall made of sand sacks. The platform will
be used as counter weight for providing reaction. (Fig: 1).

Hydraulic Jack Assembly:

A 50 ton capacity jack will be used. The pressure will be measured by a calibrated pressure gauge.

Bearing Plates:

Three plates will be used to form pyramid. On top of which a jack will sit.

Dial Gauges:

Two dial gauges will be used placed in 180 degree apart. The gauges are capable of measuring 0.01 mm
deflection.

Deflection Beam:

Two 37 mm dia, 3.0 - 4.00 m long MS/GI pipe will be used as reference deflection beam. The entire
deflection measuring system shall be adequately shaded from direct rays of the sun by placing empty sacks on
ground around test area.

Miscellaneous Tools:

A spirit level will be used to prepare the surface.

PROCEDURE

➢ Four plates (600 mm to 300 mm diameter) will be placed concentrically onto the test point with smaller
diameter atop larger diameter.

➢ Two dial gauges shall be set near each extremity of a diameter of the bearing plate. Each individual set of
readings shall be averaged, and this value is recorded as the average settlement reading.

➢ After the equipment has been properly arranged, with all of the dead load (jack, plates, etc.) acting, the
bearing plate and assembly is seated by the quick application and release of a load sufficient to produce a
deflection of not less than 0.25 mm nor more than 0.51 mm as indicated by the dials. When the dial needles
come to rest following release of this load, the plate will be reseat by applying one half of the recorded load
producing 0.25 to 0.50 mm. When the dial needles have then again will come to rest, each dial will be set at
its zero mark.
➢ Load will be applied at a moderately rapid rate in uniform increments. The magnitude of each load increment
shall be kept small enough to permit the recording of a sufficient number of load deflection points to produce
an accurate load-deflection curve. After each increment of load has been applied, its action will be allowed to
continue until a rate of deflection of not more than 0.03 mm/min has been maintained for three consecutive
minutes. Load and deflection readings for each load increment will be recorded. This produce will be
continued until the selected total deflection has been obtained, or until the load capacity of the apparatus has
been reached, whichever occurs first. At this point the load will be maintained until an increased deflection of
not more than 0.03mm/ min occurs for three consecutive minutes. Total deflection is recorded, after which the
load will be released to load at which the dial gages were set at zero, and this zero setting will be maintained
until the rate of recovery does not exceed 0.03 mm for three consecutive minutes. Deflection at zero setting is
recorded.

➢ After wards from the data load deflection curves will be drawn.
