Design of Beams: Data

This document summarizes the design of a concrete beam with a width of 300mm and overall depth of 600mm. Calculations are shown to check the beam's capacity for shear force, bending moment, and torsion. The required steel reinforcement is calculated, including main longitudinal bars, side face bars, and transverse stirrups. It is determined that 2 bars of 20mm diameter are needed at the bottom and 2 bars of 12mm diameter are sufficient higher in the beam where moments are lower. Stirrups of 8mm diameter bars at 130mm spacing also satisfy code requirements.

DESIGN OF BEAMS

DATA :

Grade of concrete, fck = 25 N/mm^2

Grade of steel, fy = 25 N/mm^2
Width of beam, b = 300 mm
Overall depth of beam, D = 600 mm
Assume, Dia of bar = 25 mm
Clear cover = 25 mm
Effective depth of beam, d = 562.5 mm
Results from staad.pro :
Shear force, Vu = 40.407 KN
Torsional moment, Tu = 28.898 KNm
Bending moment, Mu = 25.583 KNm

Calculation :
Equivalent shear, Ve = 194.530 KN
Equivalent shear stress, τve = 1.153 N/mm^2

For M25 - from the table J of SP16, we have

Maximum shear stress, τcmax = 3.1 N/mm^2
Therefore, Section do not require revision

Equivalent bending moment, Me1 = 76.579 KNm

Limiting moment, Mulim = 327.480 KNm

Refering to table 1 of sp16,correspmdimg to (Me1/(bd^2)),

we get
(Me1/(b*d^2)) = 0.807 N/mm^2
Therefore, percentage of steel, Pt = 0.234 %
Area of steel, Ast = 394.875 mm^2
Assuming 20mm dia bar, No. of bars = 1.257
Therefore, No. of bars = 2
Therefore, Provide 2 bars of 20mm dia

Mt = 50.996 KNm
Since, Mt > Mu, Me2 exists
Equivalent moment, Me2 = 25.413 KNm
(Me2/(b*d^2)) = 0.268 N/mm^2
Refering to table 1 of sp16,correspmdimg to (Me2/(bd^2)), we get
Therefore, percentage of steel, Pt = 0.084 %
Area of steel, Ast = 141.75 mm^2
Assuming 12mm dia bar, No. of bars = 1.253
Therefore, No. of bars = 2
Therefore, Provide 2 bars of 12mm dia

Side face Reinforcement :

As the depth of beam is more than 450mm, side face
reinforcement of 0.05% on each side is to be provided.
Spacing of bar, s = 267 mm
Area of steel required for each bar, Ast = 40.05 mm^2
Assuming 12mm dia bar, No. of bars = 0.354
No. of bars required on each side = 1
Therefore, provide 12mm dia bar on each side.

Transverse Reinforcement :
Assume dia stirrups as 8 mm.
d1 = 534 mm
b1 = 230 mm
Area of two legs of the stirrup, Asv
(Asv*(0.87*fy)) /( Sv) = 265.555 N/mm
= 2.656 KN/cm
Nominal Shear stress, τv = 1.153 N/mm^2
Therefore, percentage of steel, Pt = 0.234 %
Refering to table 61 of sp16, we get
Shear stress, τc = 0.35 N/mm^2
Therefore, τv > τc Transverse reinfocement required
Area of all the legs of the stirrup should satisfy the condition that,
(Asv/Sv) should not be less than ((τve - τc)*b)/(0.87*fy)
Therefore,
(Asv / Sv)*(0.87*fy) = 240.831 N/mm
= 2.408 KN/cm
Hence, Condition is Satisfied

Now referring to table 62 of sp16 :

(Vus/d) = 2.656 KN/cm
from the chart we get spacing of stirrups, s = 136.9 mm
Therefore, provide 2L #8 mm bars @ 130 mm c/c spacing

CHECK FO SPACING :
According to IS456, Cl.26.5.1.7, we have
The spacing of the stirrups shall not exceed " x1 ", " (x1 + y1)/4" & "300" mm.
Short dimension of stirrup, x1 = 258 mm
Long dimension of stirrup, y1 = 558 mm
Also, (x1 + y1) / (4 ) = 204 mm
