II. INSTALLATION MANUAL
II.1 Transport specifications
The appliance comprises a cabinet fixed to a wooden pallet. It should be handled in the vertical
position in its original packaging by means of a pallet truck or a fork lift truck. When the product is in
its packaging it can be transported by road, rail or exceptionally by air.
Some packaging is fitted with a device to show if the appliance has received a major impact or been
turned over during transport. If this device has been activated the person receiving the package
should make the usual reserves to the carrier.

II.2 Storage specifications

Temperature: -40°C to +70°C
Relative humidity: 5% to 95%

The associated battery is not concerned by these storage criteria. It is essential that it be stored
protected from sources of heat. According to the manufacturers of industrial batteries temperature
has a considerable effect on self-discharge of the battery, and hence its storage life. In order for the
battery to be easy to recharge after prolonged storage, it is advisable not to store it without
recharging for longer than:
- for "sealed" batteries: 6 months at 20°C or 4 months at 30°C or 2 months at 40°C
- for "open" batteries: 2 months at 20°C or 1 month at 30°C or 2 weeks at 40°C
Failure to respect these recommendations is prejudicial to the service life of the battery, and can lead
to irreversible deterioration. A completely discharged battery may suffer from thermal runaway when
it is recharged.
Storage time evaluation: the limit date for recharging (Manufacturer's data) appears on the battery.
Remember that a discharged battery freezes.

II.3 Environmental specifications

II.3.1 Thermal

Temperature: -5℃ to +45℃

Relative humidity: 5% to 80% excl. condensation

The associated battery falls within these use criteria, however a high temperature has a very serious
effect on its service life.
According to the data from the manufacturers of industrial batteries the service life of a battery is
reduced by 50% for every 10°C over 20°C.
However the temperature compensation of the floating voltage (provided as standard for "sealed"
batteries) enables this deterioration to be reduced to 35%.
NB: The service life of a battery is defined by a permanent loss of 20% of the initial capacity of the
battery.

II.3.2 Electrical

III. OPERATING MANUAL
III.1 Description
III.1.1 General points

The appliance, called a rectifier or charger, when associated with a battery of accumulators, makes it
possible to ensure a secure continuous electricity supply such as that necessary for users whose
supply cannot be interrupted during mains power cuts, such as safety systems, emergency lighting,
data back-up systems, etc.
It is also designed to be able to operate without a battery. In this case the rectifier cannot supply
electrical energy when the mains supply is cut off.

A load current between zero and the rated capacity of the rectifier can be output without the battery
playing a part. The battery always receives a maintenance current to keep it charged. This is the
floating operation obtained by regulation of the rectifier voltage at a constant value within a
tolerance of ± 1 %.

During failure of the mains supply the battery discharges. When the mains power returns the charger
supplies both the load current and a charging current to the battery until it is charged to reach its
floating operation level again.
Hence, for the battery to be able to be charged. The capacity (rated current) of the rectifier must be
greater than the average permanent load current.

The alternating current is rectified by means of diodes and silicon thyristors cooled by natural
convection. Output voltage regulation is obtained by a PLC (regulation board) controlling the firing
angle of the thyristors. This PLC provides, in addition, the functions of monitoring, measurement and
communication with the operator by means of LED indicator lights (light emitting diodes) and an
alphanumerical display.

The Altys micro PLC monitors and controls the battery charging mode.
It is programmable for a stationary battery application.

Battery charging takes place at constant voltage with limitation of the battery charging current:

Phase 1 (CHI) : constant current charge until the equalisation voltage level is reached
Phase 2 (CHU): constant level charge at the equalisation voltage, i.e.
until the set charge is reached
or until the recharging threshold is reached
Phase 3 (FLOA): constant level maintenance charge at the floating voltage

Switching from the floating voltage to the equalisation voltage takes place either:
after a mains power cut lasting longer than the set time.
or when the battery has become discharged and its capacity is below the threshold
setting.

III.1.5 Temperature sensor (option)

This function installed as an option (recommended for sealed lead-acid batteries) enables correction
of the voltage levels according to temperature with a slope of –3mV/°C/element in a range from 0 to
55°C.

III.1.6 Battery load-shedding (option)

This function can be installed as an option and it is obtained, according to requirements, either by
opening the battery circuit, or by opening the load circuit
In normal operation the battery or load switch is closed. If the battery voltage falls below the final
battery voltage for longer than the set time, the switch opens. It switches back in automatically as
soon as the appliance is once again operational and the battery voltage is higher than the cancellation
setting value.

Caution: switching the charger off with the On/Off switch causes the contacts to open;
consequently there is no longer supply to the load.

III.1.7 Switching to parallel

Switching into parallel of multiple Altys chargers, each associated with its own battery, necessitates
the addition of the optional Series Diode into each Altys.

III.1.8 Filtration

Without an associated battery the residual ac voltage is < 5% in effective value.

With an associated battery with the minimum capacity given in the table in § II.3.7, the residual ac
voltage is < 2% in effective value.
An optional additional filter makes it possible to obtain Filtration for telecom applications.

III.2 Commissioning
III.2.1 Preliminary checks

Perform the following checks before switching on:

- Make sure that the operations described in § II.7.1 are still in operational.
- Check the mechanical tightness of the various elements and the connections made.
- Check that the battery polarities are respected and that the battery voltage is compatible
with the appliance => consider 2V per element for a lead-acid battery and 1.2V per element
for a Nickel Cadmium battery.
- Make sure that there are no tools or accessories that could hinder operation or cause a
short circuit.

III.2.2 Switching on

- Close the power supply line protection device:

- Close the DR rectifier output protection device.
- Close the FB1 battery protection device.
Caution: charging of the filtration condensers of the appliance causes a high current but
only for a short time. Don't hesitate to operate FB1.
From now on the Altys microprocessor board is live, the display is active, the "running"
light is on and voltage is present on the load.
- Set the "On/Off" switch to I.

III.3.2.2 Ethernet communication (Option)

An RJ45 (J11) connector makes it possible to connect the charger to a computer network and to
supervise it remotely. The protocols available are http and SNMP v1. Communication can be set
internally (IP address, sub-network mask, and network gateway).

The Web pages are accessible using an Internet browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc.).
Identification, measurement, status and alarm data are available on the Ethernet network with the
SNMP V1 protocol. The MIB is available on request for setting communication with a SNMP manager.

III.3.3 Operation

The Altys board makes it possible to regulate the voltage around a set voltage and to monitor the
current supplied by the charger, and if necessary the charge current absorbed by a battery. The
current and voltage regulation set points can be set by one of the following three operating modes:
- Control by 0-10V inputs.
- Control by Modbus.
- Internal control.

The stop and fold-back modes are common to the three types of control. They are activated according
to the setting and status of the alarms.

Mode Description
Stop The charger is stopped
The control signals are stopped
The voltage and current settings are placed at their minimum
Depending on the alarm activated, the power switch may be open
Fold-back The charger is in operation
The voltage setting is fixed according to the setting by the fold-back voltage
The current limitations are fixed according to their setting

III.3.3.1 Control by 0-10V input.

The voltage setting of the charger is calculated according to the value received on 0-10V input 1 and
the voltage rating of the charger.

The rectifier current limitation is calculated according to the value received on 0-10V input 2 and the
current rating of the charger.

Depending on the internal setting of the charger, the variation ranges are:
- For the current: 0V 0A …10V In
- For the voltage:
o Charger rating = 12V: 0V 0V … 10V 15V
o Charger rating = 24V: 0V 0V … 10V 30V
o Charger rating = 48V: 0V 0V … 10V 60V
o Charger rating = 110V: 0V 0V … 10V 130V
o Charger rating = 220V: 0V 0V … 10V 250V

III.3.3.2 Control by Modbus.

The voltage setting of the charger is fixed by the value of the 20H address register of the Modbus
table. The rectifier current limitation is fixed by the value received from the of the 21H address
register of the Modbus table.

These registers are accessible via the RS485 communication and the Modbus protocol. Refer to the
Communication paragraph for more details.

III.3.3.3 Internal control

III.3.3.3.1 Operation
4 operating modes are available in internal control. Their setting is accessible via the MMI in
menu/setting/charge. The regulation voltages are expressed in V/element and displayed in V and
V/element. The calculation of the output voltage depends on the number of elements set in
menu/setting/battery.

The current settings are set in menu/setting/limitations and expressed in % of the rated current for
the rectifier current limitation, and in % of the battery capacity for the battery current limitation.

Mode Description
Floating The charger is in operation
The voltage setting is fixed according to the setting by the floating voltage
The current limitations are fixed according to their setting
Equalisation The charger is in operation
The voltage setting is fixed according to the setting by the equalisation voltage
The current limitations are fixed according to their setting
Manual charge The charger is in operation

The stop mode has priority over every other operating mode and is controlled by the triggering of an
alarm set to command "charger stop".

The fold-back mode has priority over every other operating mode (except the stop mode) and is
controlled by the triggering of an alarm set to command the switching of the charger to "fold-back".

On initialisation, the charger is in the stop mode. When the starting conditions are present, the
voltage and current settings are incremented progressively over the set duration until they reach the
voltage setting of the last operating mode saved (floating or equalisation) before the switching off of
the board.

By default, the operating mode is floating. Switching to equalisation is possible in various ways
depending on the setting:
- by a manual command via the MMI in menu/Control/floating<>equalisation
- in automatic, if an absence of mains voltage is longer than a set time (timer)
- in automatic, if the battery charge level is below a threshold setting (BDC)

The return from equalisation into floating is possible:

- by a manual command via the MMI in the menu/Control/floating<>equalisation
- in automatic, after an operation time in equalisation setting (timer)
- in automatic, if the battery charge level is above a threshold setting (BDC)

The type of automatic equalisation Control is set via the MMI in

menu/setting/charge/equalisation/Control and may be either timer or BDC (battery discharge
control).

Rq: The switching from equalisation voltage setting to floating voltage setting is progressive with a
variation of 10mV/s.

III.3.3.3.2 Manual charge

The regulation voltage can be fixed manually for a fixed time using manual charging. This operating
mode is Control via the MMI. The regulation voltage can be changed manually within a range of
voltage authorised at the adjustable thresholds. A timer can be used to force a return to the floating
mode after a fixed time.

III.3.3.3.3 Battery test

The battery test is an operating mode which makes it possible to monitor the operation of the
batteries connected at the outlet. This test can be controlled manually or periodically in automatic. It
lasts 5 hours and 10 seconds for a battery in good condition.

The automatic test can be configurable via the MMI in menu/setting/battery/test_battery. The
manual test is always accessible via the MMI in menu/Control/test_battery.

The battery test can be launched in certain conditions which are the "stopping conditions":
- The battery setting is YES
- No alarm active

- To have been in floating for more than 24 hours
- The temperature should be between 10°C and 30°C
- The load current should be more than one tenth of the battery capacity.
- Not to be under rectifier current limitation

In the automatic mode, if the battery test is impossible or has been interrupted, no alarm is triggered
and the test is attempted repeatedly for 7 day as long as it has not been run completely. If after 7
days it has still not been completed it is declared impossible and the next automatic battery test will
be commanded after the set time in days.

The battery test can give 4 different results:

Result Description
OK The battery test has run to completion and the battery voltage after 5 hours has
remained above the end-of-life voltage.
No good The battery test has run to completion but the battery voltage fell below the
end-of-life voltage before the 5 hours.
Impossible - At least one of the conditions for stopping the test prevented the battery test
being run.
- Either no battery was detected during the first part of the test.
- Or in automatic, over a period of 7 days all attempts to perform the test
properly failed.
Interrupted - Either one of the conditions for stopping the test became effective during
performance of the test.
- Or the test was stopped manually via the MMI.

When the battery test is performed it takes place in two phases:

- A first phase which serves to check that a battery is present.
- The second which allows the battery to discharge at a constant current.

Battery test, phase 1:

The voltage regulation setting is lowered to the battery end-of-life voltage. If after 10s, the battery
discharge current is more than 2% of its capacity, we consider that a battery is effectively connected,
if not the test is declared impossible.

Battery test, phase 2:
The board regulates the rectifier current to maintain a battery discharge current equal to 10% of its
capacity. The battery voltage is monitored for 5 hours. If after 5 hours, the battery voltage measured
is greater than the end-of-life voltage the test is considered OK. If during the 5 hours, the battery
voltage measured falls below the end-of-life voltage the test is considered NG (No Good).

NB: The end-of-life voltage is not adjustable; it has been calculated on the basis of the battery
Manufacturer's data for a constant discharge current equal to 10% of the capacity for 5 hours.

Whatever the final result of the battery test, the operating mode that follows is always Equalisation,
to re-charge the battery.

III.3.3.6 Log

A time stamped history of the following events is saved in an eeprom:

- Triggering of an alarm.
- Resetting of an alarm.
- A change of operating mode (e.g.: Equalisation Floating).
- Restarting of the board.

It comprises the last 50 events.

III.3.3.7 Time stamping

The date and the current time can be set via the local menu. This data is saved in a ROM memory
every hour. The board is not fitted with a back-up battery so the date and time are not updated when
the power to the board is off (AC and DC supply). On switching on the date and the current time will
be reinitialised at the last values saved before the power was cut off.
The board does not manage changes between winter/summer time.

The FCEM mode serves to control an on/off output according to the voltage measured on the
Umeasure input. A setting output in "Wesstop" will change status if the Umeasure voltage is below
the threshold setting. It returns to its initial status if the Umeasure voltage is above the hysteresis
setting.
This function serves, via a relay, to shunt the "Wesstop" diodes connected in series to the charger
output to increase the load voltage if this voltage falls too low.
These Wesstop diodes are used if the battery charge voltage (equalisation) is too high for the
equipment connected to the load side.

IV. MAINTENANCE MANUAL
CAUTION:
Maintenance necessitates opening the charger. Dangerous voltages are present inside the charger. Only specialists are authorised to perform these
operations. For internal maintenance work, the charger must be isolated from the mains and the battery.

If work has to be done with the power on, only trained persons with B2T certification can work on the rectifier.

IV.2 Preventive maintenance
IV.2.1 Battery

Batteries using sealed technology do not require any particular maintenance, however whatever the
type of battery the manufacturer’s instructions should be consulted. It is useful to perform a battery
capacity test annually, discharging the battery fully.

IV.2.2 Tightness of connections and dusting

Considering the entirely static nature of the appliance, maintenance is reduced to the test cycle below
to be carried out every 1 or 2 years depending on the environmental conditions.
- Check the tightness of the mechanical and electrical connections: a poor electrical contact can
be identified either by an abnormal voltage drop, or by overheating of the suspect connection.
If it is necessary to retighten a connection insulated tools must be used.
- Thorough dusting should also be performed: dusting can be done with a paint brush, a cloth or
a vacuum cleaner. Internal dusting should only be carried out after disconnecting the mains
supply and isolating the battery. For cleaning the outer casing, use only a cloth or a sponge
soaked in soapy water. Do not use detergents or abrasive products. Take care not to allow
liquid to enter inside the casing.

IV.3 Corrective maintenance

IV.3.1 Replacement of the battery

Follow these recommendations if the battery has to be changed while the appliance is in service:
- Before proceeding with the disconnection of a battery, first open fuse FB1
- This fuse must remain open throughout the operation
- Disconnect the positive and negative polarities of the battery
- Remove the connections between the elements
- Remove the old battery and fit the new one in an identical position
- Reconnect the connections between the elements
- Make sure that the battery connections are properly tightened before commissioning (see the
battery data sheet)
- Reconnect the positive and negative polarities of the battery
- Measure the voltage at the battery terminals
- If this voltage is correct (2.12V per element of a lead-acid battery and 1.22V per element of a
Nickel Cadmium battery), close fuse FB1 in a quick and clean movement to limit the duration
of the arc

IV.3.2 Replacement of the Altys board

NB: To avoid static electricity discharges while handling the board, the worker should put himself in
contact with the charger earth.

- Open the mains protection on the supply line.
- Remove the 2 fixing screws from the bottom of the front panel and loosen the top 2 screws
slightly to be able to slide the panel.

- Swivel the panel slightly to obtain access to the rear of the I1.
- Press the switch at the back of the I1 to release it from the panel.
- Finish swivelling the panel through 90°.
- Remove all the connectors.
- Remove the 6 screws holding the board.
- Fix the new board and put the charger back into its initial status.
- Close the mains protection on the supply line.
- Make the data settings specific to the appliance.
