Tutorial 02 - Atomic Structure

This tutorial sheet covers atomic structure and properties including defining atomic number, atomic mass unit, Avogadro's number, and atomic weight. It asks students to calculate the mass of a gold atom and number of atoms in a gold wire. The sheet also covers the Pauli Exclusion Principle, writing electron configurations, and explaining ionic and covalent bonding through examples of H2O, O2, CaO, and MgF2.

(iii) Avogadro’s number
(iv) atomic weight

2. What is the mass in grams of one atom of gold?

3. A gold wire is 0.70 mm in diameter and 8.0 cm in length. How many atoms does it contain?
The density of gold is 19.3 g/cm3.

4. State the Pauli Exclusion Principle.

5. Give the electron configurations for the following atoms and ions: B, F, P5+ and P3-

6. Explain in detail ionic and covalent bonding.
