DP Online Consequence Analysis

• The DP Online Consequence Analysis is a software function built in to

the DP system which verifies that the vessel will remain in position
even after the worst case single failure has occurred.
• The DP Online Consequence Analysis is an important operational tool
verifying the safety of the positioning and it must be active in all
class 2 and 3 operations.
• The DP Online Consequence Analysis is started and stopped by the
DP operator.
• Whenever the consequence analysis alarms, the vessel is in a
degraded operational condition and outside class requirements.
Appropriate action should then be taken to ensure the safety of the
vessel.

§ 3 - Functional Requirements
§ 3.4.2.4
For equipment classes 2 and 3, the DP-control system should include a
software function, normally known as 'consequence analysis', which
continuously verifies that the vessel will remain in position even if the
worst case failure occurs.
This analysis should verify that the thrusters remaining in operation after
the worst case failure can generate the same resultant thruster force and
moment as required before the failure.
The consequence analysis should provide an alarm if the occurrence of a
worst case failure would lead to a loss of position due to insufficient thrust
for the prevailing environmental conditions.

ABS Rules for building and classing steel vessels 2011

Part 4 Chapter 3 Section 5

15.9.6:
For vessels with DPS-2 or DPS-3 notation, the DP control system is to
incorporate a consequence analyzer that monitors the vectorial thrust
necessary to maintain position under the prevailing environmental
conditions and perform calculations to verify that in the event of a single
failure there will be sufficient thrust available to maintain position in
steady state and during transients.

K-Pos Consequence Analysis Description 1

• The analysis must be started by the operator by selecting the DP Class.

• The analysis is available for Auto Position mode.
(It can be configured to run in other low speed modes)
• In Auto position mode the analysis will run only when the system is in
Present Position and Present Heading mode. It will automatically stop
and start when the system is going out of and in to Present Position
and Present Heading mode. No message is given for this automatic
start and stop of the analysis.

K-Pos Consequence Analysis Description 2

• An analysis runs over a minute

• The result state must be “critical” in 3 consecutive analysis before the
drift off warning is reported
• This implies that it will take 3 minutes from a situation has occurred
until the message is given

K-Pos Messages

• Consequence analysis now running class x

• This message (info) is given when the operator starts the Consequence Analysis
by selecting the DP Class.
• Consequence analysis stopped
• This message (info) is given when the operator stops the Consequence Analysis
by setting the DP Class to Off or when leaving Auto Position mode.
• Consequence analysis drift off warning
• This Alarm is given when the result state from the analysis has been “critical” in
3 consecutive simulations.
• Additional data will describe the situation further. Typical information will be
“Thrust critical if bus x lost” or “Power critical if bus x lost”
• If this alarm is reported, the vessel is outside class requirements and appropriate
action should be taken.

K-Pos Consequence Analysis configurations

• The consequence analysis can be configured to cover for different

types of power and thruster systems
• It can be configured to run simulations on loss of buses, loss of
generator groups and loss of thruster groups

K-Pos Consequence Analysis strategy

The consequence analyses strategy is defined specifically for each vessel

and individually for Class 2 and Class 3.
There are two different methods that can be used for the two DP classes:
In DP Class 2:
a) Open all bus switches – Bus switches can be closed
b) Isolate the faulty bus – Bus switches can be closed

In DP Class 3:
a) Leave all bus switches unchanged – Bus switches must be open
b) Isolate the faulty bus – Bus switches can be closed

The standard method is “Open all bus switches” for class 2 and “Leave all
bus switches unchanged” for class 3.
If it can be documented that the bus switches will automatically open in
case of failure, the “Isolate the faulty bus” method can be used in Class 3.

Thruster Allocation in the Consequence Analysis

• The Consequence Analysis will usually run the analysis based on the
Thruster Allocation mode presently in use.
• On some vessels the Thruster Allocation mode automatically changes
back to Variable mode if an “Insufficient thrust” situation occurs. In
this case the Consequence Analysis will base the calculations of force
available as if the thrusters where in Variable mode.
