looks like. The measures of central tendency are the mean, median,
and mode.
Find the mean, median, mode, and range of 8, 3, 5, 4, 1, and 3.

An outlier is a value that is much greater than or much less than the
other values in a data set.
How does the outlier affect the mean, median, and mode of the data?

Write the data in order and identify the outlier.

Find the mean. Find the mean.

• Choose the measure that is closest to the greatest number of
values in the data set, OR
• If there is an outlier, think about how it affects the mean and the
median. Choose the measure that is affected least by the outlier.
