Assignment: ON Metabolism of Amino Acids

The document summarizes key details about the metabolism of amino acids. It addresses three questions: 1) The energetics of the urea cycle, noting that the overall reaction uses 3 ATP and produces 2 ATP and other molecules to convert ammonia, carbon dioxide, and aspartate into urea, fumarate, and other products. 2) How the urea cycle is interconnected with the TCA cycle through the intermediate fumarate, and how molecules can be exchanged between the two cycles. 3) A question about differences, likely between aspects of the two cycles, but no further details are provided in the document.

Q#1: Energetics of urea cycle:
The overall reaction may be summarized as:

NH3 + CO2 + Aspartate +3 ATP → Urea + fumarate +2 ATP +AMP+4 Pi

Q#2: Bicycle Shunt:

Urea cycle is interlinked with TCA and mainly fumarate of urea cycle is the linking intermediate it
is linked to TCA in three ways;

Cycle may undergo TCA and converted to malic acid oxaloacetate.

Similarly oxaloacetate may undergo deamination converted to aspartate and enter urea cycle.

2. 12 ATPs synthesized at TCA 4 of which are utilized at urea cycle.

3. carbondioxide released at TCA can be used by urea cycle it combines with ammonia to give
carbonyl phosphate.

Q#3: Difference between;
