any induced emf at the terminals of the coil, when the magnet is rotated (a) about its own axis, and (b) about an
axis perpendicular to the length of the magnet ?

Q.15) A coil Q is connected to low voltage bulb B and placed near another coil P . Give reasons to explain the
following observations :
(a) The bulb ‘B’ lights.
(b) Bulb gets dimmer if the coil Q is moved towards left.
Q.16)A square loop MNOP of side 20 cm is placed horizontally in a uniform magnetic field acting vertically
downwards . The loop is pulled with a constant velocity of 20 cm s-1 till it goes out of the field.
(i) Depict the direction of the induced current in the loop as it goes out of the field. For how long would the
current in the loop persist?
2
(ii) Plot a graph showing the variation of magnetic flux and induced emf as a function of time.
Q.17) A square loop of side 20 cm is initially kept 30 cm away from a region of uniform magnetic field of 0.1 T .
It is then moved towards the right with a velocity of 10 cm s-1 till it goes out of the field. Plot a graph showing
the variation of
(a) magnetic flux (ϕ) through the loop with time (t)
(b) induced emf (𝜀) in the loop with time t.
(c) induced current in the loop if it has resistance of 0.1 Ω
Q.18) A rectangular coil P is moved from a point A to another point B with uniform velocity ‘v’ through a
region of a uniform magnetic field acting normally inwards as shown in figure. Show graphically (i) the
variation of magnetic flux associated with the coil with time, (ii) variation of induced emf across points X and Y
of the coil with time.
Explain the nature of variation in magnetic flux as represented by the graph in first case.
Q.19) A bar magnet M is dropped so that it falls vertically through the coil C. The graph obtained for voltage
produced across the coil vs. time .
Solutions. (i) As the magnet falls towards the coil (fig. a) , the flux linked with the coil increases, emf is induced.
The induced. The induced emf increases till the magnet just reaches the top of the coil (fig. b). At this point emf
attains its maximum value.
As the magnet starts moving through the coil, the flux through the coil, the flux decreases. The induced emf
also decreases (fig. c) when the magnet moves completely inside the coil, the rate of change of magnetic flux
becomes zero and so induced emf becomes zero (fig . d).
As the magnet begins to move out of the coil at its lower end (fig. e), the flux linked with the coil starts
increasing. The induced emf also increases but opposite direction. The induced emf attains its maximum value
when the magnet just moves out of the coil at the lower end (fig. f). As the magnet moves away from the coil
(fig. g), the magnetic flux again decreases. The induced emf decreases to zero.
(ii) The magnet moves out of the coil more fastly than it moves into the coil. So the negative peak is longer
than the positive peak.

Q.20) A bar magnet M falling under gravity through an air cored coil C. Plot a graph showing variation of
induced emf (𝜀) with time (t) . What does the area enclosed by the 𝜀 – t curve depict ?
Q.21) A rectangular wire frame is placed in uniform magnetic field directed upward and normal to the plane of
the paper . The part AB is connected to a spring . The spring is stretched and released when the wire AB has
come to the position A’ B’ (t = 0). How would the induced emf vary with time ? Neglect damping.
Q.22) Two long coaxial solenoids, each of length ‘l’ . The outer solenoid has an area of cross-section A1 and
number of turns/length n1. The corresponding values for the inner solenoid are A2 and n2. Write the expression
for self inductance L1, L2 of the two coils and their mutual inductance M. Hence show that M < √𝐿1 𝐿2 .
Q.23) A square metal wire loop of side 10 cm and resistance 1 ohm is moved with a constant velocity V0 in a
uniform magnetic field of induction B=2 Wb m-2 . The magnetic lines are perpendicular to the plane of the loop
(directed into the paper ). The loop is connected to a network of resistors each of value 3 Ω. The resistance of
the loop wires OS and PQ are negligible. What should be the speed of the loop so as to have a steady current of 1
mA in the loop ? Give the direction of the current in the loop?
Q.24) The arm PQ off the rectangular conductor is moved from x = 0 to the right side. The uniform magnetic
field is perpendicular to the plane and extends from x = O to x = b and is zero for x > b. Only the arm PQ
possesses substantial resistance r. consider the situation when the arm PQ is pulled outwards from x = 0 to x =
2b and is then moved back to x = 0 with constant speed v. Obtain expressions for the flux, the induced emf, the
force necessary to pull the arm and the power dissipated as Joule heat. Sketch the variation of these quantities
with time.

Q.25) A conducting rod XY slides freely on two parallel rails, A and B, with a uniform velocity ‘v’ . A
galvanometer ‘G’ is connected , and the closed circuit has a total resistance ‘R’. A uniform magnetic field,
perpendicular to the plane defined by the rails A and B and the rod XY ( which are mutually perpendicular ), is
present over the region .
(a) With key K open :
(i) Find the nature of charges developed at the ends of the rod XY.
(ii) Why do the electrons, in the rod XY. (finally experience no net force even though the magnetic force is
acting on them due to the motion of the rod ?
(b) How much power needs to be delivered , (by an external agency), to keep the rod moving at its uniform
speed when keyK is (i) closed (ii) open ?
(c) With key K closed , how much power gets dissipated as heat in the circuit ? State the source of this power.
Q.26) An air-cored solenoid with length 30 cm, area of cross-section 25 cm2 and number of turns 500 carries a
current of 2.5 A . The current is suddenly switched off in a brief time of 10-3 s. How much is the average back emf
induced across the ends of the open switch in the circuit ? Ignore the variation in magnetic field near the ends of
the solenoid.
Q.27) A metallic rod of length ‘l’ is rotated with a frequency v with one end hinged at the centre and the other
end at the circumference of a circular metallic ring of radius r, about an axis passing through the centre and
perpendicular to the plane of the ring. A constant uniform magnetic field B parallel to the axis is present every
where. Using Lorentz force, explain how emf is induced between the centre and
the metallic ring and hence obtain the expression for it.
Ans. We know that a conductor has free charges. If a conductor of length ‘l’ is
moving perpendicular lar to a uniform magnetic field 𝐵 ⃗ with a velocity 𝑣
⃗⃗⃗
perpendicular to its length too, then a Lorentz force ⃗⃗⃗𝐹 acts on each free charge,
where
⃗⃗⃗ | = 𝑞𝑣𝐵
|𝐹
Due to this force free charges move along the length of conductor from one end
to the other end and exact direction is given by Fleming’s left hand rule. As a result of this motion of charge, a
potential difference is set up between the two ends of conductor. The potential difference developed (i.e., the
induced emf ) is given by
𝐹𝑙 𝑞𝑣𝐵𝑙
|𝜀| = = = 𝑣𝐵𝑙
𝑞 𝑞
Now , consider a conductor rod of length ‘l’ hinged at one end M and rotating about a normal axis passing
through M with a frequency v, then for a small element of rod of thickness ‘dx’ situated at a distance ‘x’ from the
hinged end , the induced emf is
𝑑𝜀 = 𝐵𝑣 𝑑𝑥 = 𝐵(𝑥𝜔)𝑑𝑥 = 𝐵(𝑥. 2𝜋𝑣)𝑑𝑥
⇒ 𝑑𝜀 = 2𝜋𝑣𝐵 𝑥𝑑𝑥
∴ Induced emf between the two ends of rod
𝑙 𝑙2
𝜀 = 2𝜋𝑣𝐵 ∫𝑜 𝑥𝑑𝑥 = 2𝜋𝑣𝐵. 2 = 𝜋𝑣𝐵𝑙 2
As radius of metallic ring ‘r’ = length of rod l , the result may also be written as :
𝜀 = 𝜋𝑣𝐵𝑙 2 = 𝜋𝑣𝐵 𝑟 2
Q.28) Two concentric circular coils C1 and C2 , radius r1 and r2 (r1 << r2) respectively are kept co-axially. If
current is passed through C2 , then, find an expression for mutual inductance between the two coils.
Q.29) A jet plane is travelling towards west at a speed of 1800 km/h. What is the voltage difference developed
between the ends of the wings having a span of 25 m, if the Earth’s magnetic field at the location has a
5
magnitude of 5 × 10-4 T and the dip angle is 30ᵒ ?
30) An aeroplane is flying horizontally from west to each with a velocity of 900 km/hour. Calculate the
potential difference developed between the ends of its wings having a span of 20 m. The horizontal
component of the Earth’s magnetic field is 5 × 10−4 T and the angle of dip is 30ᵒ .
31) Figure shows a current carrying solenoid moving towards a conducting loop. Find the direction of the
current induced in the loop.
32) Two loops of different shapes are moved in the region of a uniform magnetic field pointing downward. The
loops are moved in the directions shows by arrows. What is the direction of induced current in each loop?
33) Consider a magnet surrounded by a wire with an on/off switch S (as shown in figure). If the switch is
thrown from the off position (open circuit) to the on position (closed circuit), will a current flow in the
circuit? Explain.
34) The closed loop PQRS is moving into a uniform magnetic field acting at right angles to the plane of the paper
as shown. State the direction of the induced current in the loop.
35) A metallic rod held horizontally along east-west direction is allowed to fall under gravity. Will there be an
emf induced across its ends?
36) If the resistance R in circuit ‘a’ decreased, what will be the direction of induced current in circuit ‘b’?
