HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY-BASED LEARNING

MATERIAL

Welcome to the module in Installing Pole Hardware and

Accessories. This module contains training materials and activities for you
to complete.

The unit of competency “Install Pole Hardware and Accessories.”

contains knowledge, skills and attitudes required for Cable Television
Installation NC II. It is one of the specialized modules at National
Certificates Level (NC II).

You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order

to complete each learning outcome of the module. In each learning outcome
are Information Sheets and Resources Sheets (Reference Materials for
further reading to help you better understand the required activities). Follow
these activities on your own and answer the self-check at the end of each
learning outcome. You may remove a blank answer sheet at the end of each
module (or get one from your facilitator/ trainer) to write your answers for
each self-check. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask you facilitator
for assistance.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may already have some or most of the knowledge and skills
covered in this learner’s guide because of you have:
 been working for some time
 already completed training in this area

If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a

particular skill or skills, talk to him/ her about having them formally
recognized so you don’t have to do the same training again. If you have a
qualification or Certificate of Competency from previous trainings, show
it to your trainer. If the skills you acquired are still current and relevant
to the unit/s of competency they may become part of the evidence you
can present for RPL. If you are not sure about the currency of your skills,
discuss this with your trainer.

At the end of this module is a Learner’s Diary. Use this diary to record
important dates, jobs undertaken and other workplace events that will
assist you in providing further details to your trainer or

assessor. A Record of Achievement is also provided for your trainer to

complete once you complete the module.

This module was prepared to help you achieve competency, in Install

Subscriber Drop Lines and CPE. This will be the source of information for
you to acquire knowledge and skills in this particular trade independently
and at your own pace, with minimum supervision or help from your trainer.
 Talk to your trainer and agree on how you will both organize the
Training unit. Read through the module carefully. It is divided into
sections, which cover all the skills, and knowledge you need to
successfully complete this module.
 Work through all the information and complete the activities in
section. Read information sheets and complete the self-check.
Suggested references are included to supplement the materials
provided in this module.
 Most probably your trainer will also by your supervisor or manager.

and also your confidence.
 Talk to more experience workmates and ask for their guidance.
 Use the self-check questions at the end of each section to test your
own progress.
 When you are ready, ask your trainer to watch you perform the
activities outline in this module.
 As you work through the activities, ask for written feedback on your
progress. Your trainer keeps feedback/ pre-assessment reports for
this reason. When you have successfully completed each element, ask
your trainer to mark on the reports that you are ready for institutional
assessment.
 When you have completed the institutional assessment, the results of
your assessment will be recorded in our competency Achievement
Record and Progress chart.

JPA AND SOP POLE HARDWARE INSTALLATION

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Identify the tools, equipment, testing devices, & materials needed
for installation
2. Install pole hardware with the consent of the JPA and SOP in
accordance with the standard industry practices.

By understanding essential aspect of Installing Pole Installation, you

will be more knowledgeable about this task and better able to meet system
standard. This contributes the signal security and maintenance of high-
quality signal reception, leading to customer satisfaction and financial
soundness. The two key term used in Competency –based training are the
following:
JPA- it is bilateral agreement between the pole owner and the pole user
SOP- is to provide detailed instructions on how to carry out a task so that
any team member can carry out the task correctly every time.

Tools, Materials and Equipments needed in installing Pole Hardware

Installation and Accessories.

1. Extension ladders (24 feet length)- a ladder that can be extended by

means of sliding sections.

2. Ball Hammer-  is useful for many tasks, such as striking punches and chisels
(usually performed with the flat face of the hammer)
3. Adjustable wrench-  a wrench similar to an open end wrench but
having one fixed jaw and one adjustable jaw

4. Combination Wrenches- a wrench with one open end and one socket

end.

MATERIALS:
1. Pole clamp- is a device that holds two things firmly together.

2. 3 bolt suspension- suspension clamp is also called clamp suspension or suspension fitting,
it is a general speaking of all kinds of clamps that hang the conductors or cables to the pole or tower.

3. Bolts and Nuts- Bolts are screws with threaded cylinders and various types

of heads. They are nearly always paired with a nut which has a matching
threaded hole.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
1. Body Belt & Strap- Provide positioning and fall protection when you are
working from a ladder against a pole or strand, and when you are climbing
poles

2. Hard Hat/ Helmet- Protect your head from impact injuries and electrical
shock.

3. Set Gloves- Protect hands from a number of hazards present during

CATV fieldwork

4. Goggles- eye protection against danger of injury to your eyes from foreign
objects.

5. Safety Shoes- Protect your feet from injury and to ensure proper footing
when climbing
6. Tool Pouch / Holster- a bag in which tools are carried. bag - a flexible
container with a single opening.

7. Safety Cones/Traffic Safety Devices- also called traffic pylons, road

cones, highway cones, safety cones, witch's hat, or construction cones,
are usually cone-shaped markers that are placed on roads or footpaths to
temporarily redirect traffic in a safe manner.

Joint Pole Agreement (JPA) Lines Installation

SAFETY ZONE SPACE

- Is an unusual space separating electric supply
facilities from communication facilities?
THE COMMUNICATION SPACE
- Contains cable television (CATVI) telephone and
another communication cables.
 Telephone- telephone cable supported byb steel strand.
Each telephone cable contains several individual copier; a
large cables may contains as many as several hundred
pairs.
 Cable TV- coaxial Cables and equipment supported by steel
strand. An expansion loop at each pole absorbs expansion
and construction caused by temperature variations.
 Other- just any other type of communication circuits among
the more common and fire and police-alarm wiring traffic
signal control wiring and closed circuit audio or video
communications circuits.
Pole Attachment and Clearances

I. General guidelines for the Pole Attachment

II. Allowable Cable and wire sag and Clearance
III. Guy Support
IV. Grounding System- all pole users shall install and
maintain their own grounding system when so required
and should not attach the pole owner grounding system.
V. Cable Laying.
 Pole inspection – the condition of the pole are both
critical to safety of an attempted climb. There are
several tests which can be performed prior to climbing.
a. Visual test- this is the easiest and quickest check of
the condition of the pole.
b. Sound Test- Take a hammer and sound repeatedly
around the circumference of the pole.
c. Prod Test- this method is use to check the base of
the pole about 2” below ground level.
d. loosely loop the hand line around the pole. Walk the
hand line about half (at least 10 feet) up the pole.
VI. Aerial cable Installation

Job safety Precautions

-A construction site can be dangerous work

environment. It is extremely important to be aware of what
is happening at all times. Do not take step without knowing
where your foot will land. Wear hard hat, goggles and work
boots at all times when working in a construction site
