Properties of Fluids

Fall 2018
Due on 20/9/2018

(1) LAB: If the dynamic viscosity of a liquid is 0.05 poise and the specific gravity is 0.85, find
the dynamic and kinematic viscosity in international units.

(2) The space between two parallel plates 0.04 cm apart is filled with oil. If the lower plate is
fixed while the upper one is pulled at a constant speed of 24 cm/s by a force 4.0 gm, find the
oil viscosity. Consider the surface area of the plate = 200.0 cm2 .

(3) The space between two parallel plates is 3.0 cm apart is filled with oil of viscosity 0.0097
gm.s/cm2 . A very thin plate of area 0.40 m2 is pulled through the oil 1.0 cm from the upper
plate. What is the force required to pull the plate at a uniform speed of 0.30 m/s?

(4) LAB: A piston 11.96 cm in diameter and 14.0 cm long works in a cylinder 12.0 cm diameter.
If the space between them is filled with oil of viscosity 0.70 poise, calculate the speed at which
the piston will move through the cylinder when an axial load of 0.10 N is applied.

(5) LAB: To what height above the static reservoir level will water rise in a glass tube, if the
inside diameter of the tube is 1.6 mm? (hint: σs (water) = 0.074 N/m)

(6) A block of weight W slides down an inclined plane while lubricated by a thin film of oil,
as in Fig. 1. The film contact area is A and its thickness is h. Assuming a linear velocity
distribution in the film, derive an expression for the terminal (zero-acceleration) velocity V of
the block.

(7) Find the terminal velocity of the block in Fig. 1 if the block mass is 6 kg, A = 35 cm2 , θ = 15◦ ,
and the film is 1-mm-thick SAE 30 oil at 20C (µ = 2.9 × 10−1 N/m2 .s).

(8) LAB: A thin plate is separated from two fixed plates by very viscous liquids µ1 and µ2 ,
respectively, as in Fig. 2. The plate spacings h1 and h2 are unequal, as shown. The contact
area is A between the center plate and each fluid. (a) Assuming a linear velocity distribution in
each fluid, derive the force F required to pull the plate at velocity V . (b) Is there a necessary
relation between the two viscosities?

(9) LAB: The system in Fig. 3 is used to calculate the pressure p in the tank by measuring the
15-cm height of liquid in the 1-mm-diameter tube. The fluid is at 60◦ C. Calculate the true
fluid height in the tube and the percent error due to capillarity if the fluid is (a) water and
(b) mercury.
