Juan Nevarez Mrs. Catherine/BIOL 1408 June 18, 2020 Osmosis & Diffusion Lab First Impressions and Hypothesis

The document summarizes Juan Nevarez's osmosis and diffusion lab. He observed bubbles forming around an egg placed in vinegar, indicating osmosis drawing water out of the egg. The egg shrank in vinegar and salt water but swelled in corn syrup, with osmosis driving water movement across the egg membrane to equalize solute concentrations between the solutions and egg contents. Osmosis and diffusion both move substances across membranes, but osmosis requires a semipermeable membrane and moves water to equalize solute concentration while diffusion equalizes concentrations without requiring a membrane.

CONCLUSIONS

1. When the egg is first placed in vinegar, bubbles began appearing around it. What
can be inferred about the cause of these bubbles?

2. How did the diameter of the egg change after it had been sitting in each of the
different solutions for 24hours? What caused the egg to change? (Include a separate
two-part answer for each solution type: vinegar, corn syrup, salt water, and plain tap
water). Explain the changes of the egg’s diameter in terms of osmosis.

3. Compare and contrast (similarities and differences) the process of osmosis versus
diffusion. Give examples of where they might occur in everyday life (or in cellular
processes). Use the online textbook and/or search the internet for clarity. Five to seven
sentences minimum.
