Project description
A three and half year’s project will be implemented with Catholic diocese of Geita, Health
Department.
In line with the ASTUTE project goals, Health department aims at reaching pregnant and children
under five years and their caregivers through innovative approaches that adopt a multisectoral
bottom-up approach to address childhood stunting.
The approach will be implemented step by step for the project period and will include periodic
review, through an embedded process evaluation. This is a unique approach in the project area
because the existing approaches have not been too helpful in addressing childhood studying.
To implement the specific nutritional behaviors which will be targeted, the project will have to
fulfill the following objectives:
1. To develop simple innovation (small changes) in the health facilities/system to increase
early detection, intervention and care for mothers, newborn and children.
The diocese of Geita will conduct SWOT analysis and orient health care workers to providing
the solutions to the problems they face. This is meant to ensure ownership of the project to
the health system and hence its sustainability.
The following activities will be done:
i. Facility SWOT assessment
ii. Generate GIS mapping of facilities with nutrition, health details
iii. Encourage Health Workers to propose solutions (rearrangements, design posters,
time plan)
iv. Find champions among health workers and promote their innovations
v. Mentoring Health Care workers
2. To improve community nutritional behavior (adherence to IFA, early ANC booking,
Food diversification, exclusive breastfeeding, complementary feeding, immunization,
prevention of childhood illnesses).
It is a curriculum requirement for medical students to train and conduct nutrition field
projects. Hence, this exercise can be oriented towards Geita region, thus providing the
platform for “Treat and Train” for medical students. Their number being not less than 200
students each year, coverage at 1000/a day in Geita will easily be achieved. These
students are trained in nutrition assessment, behavior change communication and many
other health issues related to nutrition thus can provide the reach and appropriate
knowledge to the community. Furthermore, this project will ensure generate a platform
for an everlasting relation between Geita region and Catholic Diocese of Geita.
The following activities will be done:
i. Community Based Research: Household assessment of nutrition status, food
security and WASH
