Modifiers

Modifiers are words, phrases, or clauses that describe or specify the meaning of another element in a sentence. There are two main types of modifiers: dangling modifiers, which modify a word that is not clearly stated, and misplaced modifiers, where the modifier is improperly separated from what it modifies, making the sentence sound awkward. Examples of each are provided to illustrate improper versus proper usage of modifiers.
