DC DT C DC DT C: For X 0.9 in A Mixed Flow Reactor

The document describes two assignment problems involving chemical reaction kinetics: 1) It examines the reactions of compounds A and B in mixed-flow and plug-flow reactors to determine the rates of desired and undesired products under various conditions. 2) It considers gas-phase reactions of compound A to form desired product B and undesired products X and Y, asking students to sketch reaction rates, size the first reactor, and determine effluent concentrations from the first reactor to achieve 90% conversion of A.

ASSIGNMENT 2

CHE331A

1. Consider the aqueous reactions

d CR 2 0.5
A +B → R, desired =4.0 C A C B , mol/liter∙min
dt
d Cs 2
A +B → S, undesired =2.0 C A C B , mol/liter∙min
dt
equal volumetric flow rates of the A and of B streams are fed to the reactor,
and each stream has a concentration of 40 mol/liter of reactant.
a) Find CR and CS for XA = 0.9 in a mixed flow reactor.
b) Find CR and CS for XA = 0.9 in a plug flow reactor.
c) Plug flow reactor with the side stream of CB = 2 mol/liter throughout the reactor
(plug flow A – mixed flow B)

2. Consider the following system of gas-phase reactions,

A→X r X =k 1 k 1=¿ 0.001 mol/liter∙min

A→B r B=k 2 C A k 2 = 0.05 min-1
A→Y r Y =k 3 C 2A k 3 = 0.2 liter/mol∙min

B is the desired product, and X and Y are undesired products. The specific
reaction
rates are at 27°C. The reaction system is to be operated at 27°C and 4 atm. Pure A
enters the system at a volumetric flow rate of 10 liter/min.
a) Sketch the instantaneous yield, YB = rB/(rX + rB + rY) as a function of the
concentration of CA. (use excel)
b) Consider a series of reactors (MFR and PFR). What should be the volume of the
first reactor?
c) What are the effluent concentrations of A, B, X, and Y from the first reactor?
d) If 90'% conversion of A is desired, what reactor scheme and reactor
sizes should you use?
