Lower Congo Basin 3D

The Lower Congo Basin is a prolific deepwater oil province located offshore Angola with significant discoveries and fields,
such as the giant Dalia and Girassol. CGG offers a 3D survey within this promising region covering 4,380 km2 over the
unlicensed Block 33.

Overview
The Angola-00 survey covers close to 90 % of the unlicensed
Block 33 in the deep waters of Angola. It lies within a very
attractive area, just 10 km south-west of the giant Dalia field
with the Calulu Field being located within the survey. Only five
wells have been drilled so far within this block, leaving a largely
underexplored potential over the survey area, especially within
the pre-salt section. As prospectivity within this basin lies within
Tertiary turbidites, the Angola-00 survey was specially designed
to target this unit whilst also providing clear imaging through the
complex salt structures present in the area.

Highlights
• Total data coverage of 4,380 km2
• Key location within unlicensed acreage directly south-west of
the Dalia field development
• Subsalt imaging and detailed mapping of the Tertiary turbidite
system

Geological setting
Early Cretaceous rifting resulted in the separation of Africa and Block 33, and a NE-SW orientation of the prospective Tertiary
South America as Gondwana began to break up. The pre-rift geology channels has been identified.
beneath the Aptian salt has remained largely unaltered and is
believed to be consistent from one continent to the other. A series
of analogous basins on both sides of the Atlantic can be traced Calulu Field
flat spot
along the entire length of the conjugate African and South American
margins. Each of these basins contain early Cretaceous organic-rich
source rocks which formed in deep, anoxic, lacustrine syn-rift basins
and an extensive post-rift, Aptian-aged salt layer which acts as a
regionally extensive seal.
The dominant Tertiary play within the Lower Congo Basin consists
of confined slope channel systems developed in the Oligocene and
Miocene directly overlying mature Iabe source rocks. These channels
are trapped by a series of salt-induced pillow and turtle structures.
A very successful exploration campaign has proven this play
throughout Blocks 15, 17 and 18, which lie directly northeast of Seismic section showing the Calulu Field flat spot.
