LESSON 4
INDIVIDUAL AND COLLABORATIVE SPEAKING TASKS
SITUATION A:
An individual speaking task involves the ability you have to provide information when it is needed. In this kind
of exercise you don’t need to ask anything just concentrate on undertand and provide information, but
following these tips:
• Listen to the interlocutor carefully, if you didn’t get the idea try to say this: “I couldn’t hear you, May you
repeat your question please? Can you repeat it, please? Could you repeat it, please? Sorry I didn’t catch
that idea, Could you say that again?”
• Don’t get anxious or nervous because speaking in English doesn’t mean to speak fast, take your time and
provide real information.
• Try to use phrases or words to give you more time to think “Let me think, Well, that’s a very intresting
question, I’m glad you’ve asked me that question, that’s a good question, just let me take a moment to
consider your question, so let me see, that’s an intresting point to discuss, etc”
• Also if you want to provide you point of view, do not hesitate to use these phrases: “In my opinion, in my
view, In my experience, Personally I think/believe, As far as I know, I’d like to point out that, If you ask
for my opinion, from my point of view, I have no opinion in this matter, etc”

That’s just what I was thinking, etc.
• Disagree someone: I cannot share that point of view, I totally disagree with you, I’m afraid I can’t agree
with you, I don’t agree with you, That’s not entirely true, I’m not sure about that, Yes, but don’t you
think, etc.
• Partial agreetment: That’s true but, You could be right, I see your point but, I agree with you in part, It
