Week 3-Lecture Class Chapter 1: Mathematical Reasoning 1.2 Types of Reasoning 1.2.2 Deductive Reasoning

The document discusses deductive reasoning. It provides two examples of deductive reasoning: 1) reasoning from the general statement that mammals consist of three groups to the specific cases that the platypus, kangaroo, and buffalo are mammals. 2) reasoning from the general statement that all marsupials carry young in pouches to the specific cases that wallabies, wombats, koalas, and possums are marsupials. Students are instructed to provide examples of inductive and deductive reasoning based on pictures shown.

MTES3023: MATHEMATICALS REASONING

Week 3-Lecture Class

CHAPTER 1: MATHEMATICAL REASONING

1.2 Types of Reasoning
1.2.2 Deductive Reasoning
Reasoning that starts from a general statement to a specific case.

Example 1:

General statement:

Mammals consists of three groups namely monotremes, marsupials, and

placental mammals

Specific cases:

Platypus (below the laying monotreme) is a mammal

The kangaroo (under the marsupial) is a mammal

The buffalo (under the placenta mammal) is a mammal

Example 2:

General statement:

All marsupials carry a small child in the mother's pouch

Specific cases:

Wallaby is a marsupial

Wombat is a marsupial

Koala is a marsupial
