Knowing Lovingly:

What is a Rosary? What is its origin?

October has long been the month dedicated to the Rosary. Pope St. Pius V
established the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7th) in 1573 to thank
God for the victory of Christians over the Turks at Lepanto, a victory attributed to
the praying of the rosary. Pope Clement XI expanded the feast to the universal
Church in 1716. The dedication of the entire month to this devotion was officially
established by Pope Pius XII in 1884. While devotion to this prayer form waned a
bit in the years immediately after Vatican II, interest in this long-practiced
devotion is experiencing a resurgence as the faithful rediscover the beauty and
spiritual benefit of this meditative practice. The name “rosary” comes from the
Latin “rosarium” which means “rose garden.” A rosary is widely considered a gift
of roses to Our Blessed Mother in heaven.
Integrating Holistically:
Why pray the Rosary? The Rosary is arguably the most recognizable Catholic
devotion. Sadly, it is a devotion that has fallen out of fashion for many Catholics.
This is deeply unfortunate, as the Rosary is one of the most powerful weapons in
our arsenal for spiritual warfare and one of the greatest aids in the pursuit of a
fruitful spiritual life. Among the most common excuses for failing to pray the
Rosary one hears are that it’s “boring” or that it takes too much time. What
many Catholics aren’t aware of, however, are the benefits – promises from Our
Lady of the Rosary herself – associated with its faithful recitation.
Understanding Fully:
The origin of the Rosary, according to tradition, began in 1214 when the Blessed
Virgin Mary gave St Dominic the Rosary prayer. St Dominic was asked by Mary
to preach the Rosary in order to safe guard people against evil and sin.
Many years later, in October 1571, a Christian fleet went into battle at Lepanto.
Pope Pius V, himself a Dominican, had called on all Christians to join in praying
the Rosary as the army of the Holy League went into battle. They won the battle
and freed 15,000 Christian slaves. They attributed their victory to Mary and the
praying of the Rosary. The anniversary of this day became known as the Feast
of Our Lady of the Rosary and the month of October was dedicated to the
praying of the Rosary.
The Rosary is a popular devotion loved and practiced by many. Even though
Marian in character, it contains the whole Gospel story and therefore is truly a
Christ-centered prayer. The Rosary is divided into decades. A decade is one
“Our Father” followed by ten “Hail Mary’s” and a “Glory Be”. There are 20 stories
to think about. Each story is called a “Mystery”.
