Why we are shallow
In F. Sionil Jose’s article, it points out several reasons why Filipinos are shallow.
Shallow people are described as being vain and focused on physical perception. Their
perception of life is based mostly on beauty, property or money. In F. Sionil Jose’s
aricle, he specified six reasons why we Filipinos are shallow. The firs reason he pointed
out is the Philippines’s educational system because our educational system places less
attention on the humanities. Humanities is significant for us Filipinos because it enables
us to gain a broader attainment of our past and its philosophies and it also helps us
understand who we are Filipinos. The second reason he specified is because of our
ego. He wrote that Filipinos are shallow because we are mayabang, ego-driven, and
arrogant. He stated that we mistake knowledge for wisdom. He pointed out that public
commentators are framed as knowledgeable people by the media. The third reason why
we are shallow, according to him, is because of “religious quacks”. He wrote that we
lack the perception and courage to deny these religious quacks. People who follow to
these religious quacks let their opinions be dictated by these religious quacks. They
blindly follow these religious quacks without judgment. The next reason F Sionil Jose
wrote is because our media is also shallow. The programs that the media show lack
quality; they do not encourage critical thinking. Viewers do not look beyond what is
offered to them. That’s why people who subscribe to the media also become shallow.
The fifth reason why we are shallow is because we don’t read. Lack of reading results in
poor language skills, shortage in information. The last reason, he pointed out, why we
are shallow is because we are enslaved by gross materialism. We became materialistic
because of the media taught us. The media define our idea of success. And because of
that Filipinos think only material things can satisfy them.
