The Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC) is a voluntary autonomous
multidisciplinary board that provides direction for and administers the certification process for professionals in
infection control and applied epidemiology. CBIC is independent and separate from any other infection control-
related organization or association.
CBIC endorses the concept of voluntary, periodic certification for all infection control professionals meeting
educational and practice requirements.
1. Providing standardized measurement of current basic knowledge needed for persons practicing infection
control.
2. Encouraging individual growth and study, thereby promoting professionalism among infection control
professionals.
3. Formally recognizing infection control professionals who fulfill the requirements for certification.
Certification represents the commitment of an infection prevention and control professional and an institution to
the continued improvement of infection prevention and control functions and their contribution to healthcare and
patient safety. The mission of CBIC is to protect the public through the development, administration, and
promotion of an accredited certification in infection prevention and control.
In order to qualify to sit for initial (first-time) certification, or if certification has lapsed and renewal of certification
is desired, a candidate must apply to take the proctored initial certification examination. The initial examination is
administered via computer-based testing at Prometric testing centers worldwide. Before applying to take the
examination, candidates should check to see if they meet the CBIC eligibility requirements. A complete listing of
these eligibility requirements, as well as both paper and online examination applications, can be found on the CBIC
website at www.cbic.org.
To be complete, an examination application must include proof of a minimum of a two-year degree from an
accredited educational institution, a completed CBIC attestation statement form that has been completed, signed
and dated by the candidate’s supervisor, an updated resume, a signed official job description and the application
fee.
Certificants who are in the fifth year of their certification and are due to recertify may apply to take the online
recertification examination. The online recertification examination is geared towards the advanced practitioner
and is a self-paced examination that examinees access via a secure website administered by Prometric.
CBIC encourages interested candidates to visit the CBIC website for more information. Questions or concerns
