AVID - Prep and Export .

AAF and QuickTime Movie to


ProTools

Step One - AVID - Prep the sequence with two POPS at beginning and
end of timeline
Import 10 seconds of color bars into bin.

Go to:
Applications>
Avid Media Composer> SupportingFiles
>Test_Patterns
>HD_1080> choose SMPTE_Bars.tif

Click on Options

Select the following:

Image Size Adjustment – choose Image sized for current format

Color Levels - Choose Do not modifty, treat as legal range

Alpha Channel – choose Ignore

Set the frame import duration to 10 seconds


Then click OK on the options menu then click OK on import menu
A 10 second clip of bars will import into selected bin
Creating Tone Media
Click on the "Meter Menu" on the AVID timeline and choose
"Create Tone Media" from the dropdown menu

Choose 10 seconds 2 tracks leave level as -20. Choose


target bin and drive.
Click OK and 2 tracks of tone will be created in bin.
Load a COPY of the final sequence in the timeline
Make sure that the start time of the sequence is 1:00:00:00

Delete anything that is before first picture such as slug or


bars and tone. Then right click in the record side of the
composer window. Choose Sequence Report

Load the Bars into the source side of the composer window and mark the clip so that there is a 1 frame duration of bars between the in
and out points.
Edit this into the timeline using the splice tool.

Load the TONE into the source side of the composer window and mark the clip so that there is a 1 frame duration of bars between the in
and out points.
Edit this into the timeline using the overwrite tool so that the tone "Audio Edit" matches the bars "Video" edit in the timeline.

Next load the filler in the source side monitor


Load the filler
Mark an inpoint and then mark an outpoint 1 second and 23 frames later so the duration is 1:23
Make sure all the tracks on the timeline are selected before doing the "Splice In Edit"

Edit this into the timeline using the splice tool.

Change the start time of the sequence timeline by right clicking in the record side monitor as explained earlier and choosing "Sequence
Report" and change the start time to 59:58:00 as shown. Click Apply Changes
Next place a two pop at the end of the sequence timeline.
Go to the bars and tone at the beginning of the sequence and mark an "In" and an "Out" point so you have a 1 frame duration of the V1, A1 and
A2 2pop and the beginning and press "Command C" to copy it.
Then go to the end of the timeline and paste it placing the two pop
at the end of the timeline.

Step Two – Export and .AAF of the audio to import into ProTools
1. Make sure the AVID Audio Project Settings are set correctly. Go to the Project Bin and click on the "Settings" tab. Then click on the Audio
Project settings.

1. In the Audio Project Settings window change the "Sample Bit Depth" to 24 and also make sure the Sample Rate is 48KHz.

1. Make a new bin and call it Audio Export


2. Copy the sequence you want to export to .omf into the new bin by holding down the "Alt"(win) or "Cntrl" (mac) key and dragging the

sequence to the new bin
3. Close your original sequences bin

Open sequence in timeline and select the video and audio tracks to export. Mark an in point at the beginning of the portion of the timeline
to export and an out point at the end of the portion of the timeline to export. If the whole timeline is to be exported mark an in point at the
beginning and an out at the end.
Example of how timeline should look before exporting.

Choose File>Export

Make a Folder on the destination hard drive to hold both the .aaf
and the consolidated Audio Files. Choose that folder after you
click "Save"
Navigate to the hard drive and folder to save the .aaf and the
Consolidated Media

Then click on "Options"


Choose the following:

Export As: AAF

Use marks and enabled tracks

Include All Audio

Consolidate Media

Handle Length 180 frames

Include Rendered Audio Effects

Render All Audio Effects

Convert Audio to Sample Rate

Convert Bit Depth

Convert Audio File

All to Project

Make a Folder on the destination hard drive to hold both the .aaf
and the consolidated Audio Files. Choose that folder after you
click "Save"

Click "Save" on this menu and click "OK" on the other menu and then AVID will start to create your AAF file. When AVID is finished you will find
your file where you chose to save it in "export settings menu"

Step Three - Export the QuickTime "Chase" Movie to use in ProTools


Session
1. Open AVID and change your Format of your Project to 720 just for this exporting session. Go to your Project Window in AVID and go to
the "Format" tab and change the Project Type to 720p/23.976. We will be exporting a 720 QuickTime for ProTools that is why we are
doing this.
1. First open sequence in timeline and select the video and audio tracks to export. Mark an in point at the beginning of the portion of the
timeline to export and an out point at the end of the portion of the timeline to export. If the whole timeline is to be exported mark an in
point at the beginning and an out at the end.
2. Example of how timeline should look before exporting.

1. Next go to >File>Export>

Click on Options
a. Choose Export As QuickTime Movie, Use Marks, Use Enabled Tracks if
you only want to export a certain part of the timeline. Leave them
unchecked to export the whole timeline
b. Uncheck Same as Source by clicking on the Custom button
c. Click on Video and Audio (Recommended)
d. Video Format 1280 x 720 Width and Height
e. Color Levels should be Keep at Legal Range
f. Display Aspect Ratio leave on Native Dimensions
g. Click on Format Options

Click on Video Settings


Choose Compression Type DV/DVCPRO - NTSC

Quality - Best

Scan Mode - Progressive

Aspect Ratio - 16:9

Click OK

Click On Movie Settings > Size

Choose Dimensions HD 1280 x 720 16:9

Preserve aspect ratio using "Letterbox"

Click OK
These are the final settings for the QuickTime Movie Settings

Compression: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC

Best Quality

Progressive

16:9 Aspect Ratio

1280 x 720 Letterbox

Video and Audio checkboxes should be checked.

Audio 48kHz 16 bit

Make sure Prepare for Internet Streaming is unchecked

Click OK
This is how the AVID export window should be set

Video Format 1280 x 720 Width and Height

Color Levels should be Keep at Legal Range

Display Aspect Ratio leave on Native Dimensions

Click on Save and will be promted to select a place to save the quicktime

Then click Save and the export will start.
