STRATEGIC BUSINESS ANALYSIS

ASSIGNMENT #5: Analyzing Resources and Capabilities

1. Since it was founded in 1994, Amazon has expanded its business

from online book sales, to online general retailing, to audio
and video streaming, to e‐readers and tablet computers, to
cloud computing. Is Amazon's strategy based primarily upon
serving a market need or primarily on exploiting its resources
and capabilities?

I think the company has a wide resources and capabilities. But yes, I think it is one

of the markets of the Amazon to cope up with the change.in able to adapt to change and

still continue to generate profit. The organization has wide assets and capacity that

empowers it to adventure and make this organization serving wide assortment of item. The

point of the organization is to turn into the world's biggest retail location and to accomplish

that Amazon grows their business as they can. They turned their great asset to another

source of income which is another investment also to their business.

2. The world's leading typewriter manufacturers in the 1970s

included Olivetti, Underwood, IBM, Olympia, Remington, Smith
Corona, and Brother Industries. While IBM and Brother adapted
to the microelectronics revolution, most of the others
failed. What strategies might these companies have pursued as
an alternative to producing personal computers and electronic
word processors market?
The mentioned companies are known for production of typewriters. Typewriters are

one of the crucial things that students need in education, not just students also artist. They

could have an alternative of producing school supply just like papers, pencils, ballpens and

so on so they could still on track with the purpose of making things easy and productive

for students or its customers in general.

3. I have argued that the part of discrepancy between firms'

stock market value and their book value reflects the fact
that intangible resources are typically undervalued or not
valued at all in their balance sheets. For the companies
listed in Table 5.1, which types of resource are likely to be
absent or undervalued in the firms' balance sheets?
According to the data I gathered, intangible assets just like goodwill, patent,

customer feedback, satisfaction rate, intellectual property rights and so on will greatly

affect the BVPS or the Book Value per Share of the stockholders. Every asset counts when

doing a computation on BVPS so the intangible asset is also included in the computation.

Having this knowledge, when the accountant compute the BVPS again including the

intangible assets mentioned above, the value per share will be fair to all of the stockholders.

4. Many companies announce in their corporate communications:

“Our people are our greatest resource.” In terms of the

criteria listed in Figure 5.7, can employees be considered of

the utmost strategic importance? For Walmart, McDonald's, and

McKinsey & Company, how important are employees to their

competitive advantages?
The answer in this is Yes. Employees are important in Strategic. Without manpower

business will not grow so much and production will be low. In the company of Walmart,

McDonald’s and Mckinsey they will be needing a lot of manpower. In McDonalds they

will be needing a chef, a service crew and a cashier, without them there will be no

production causing a business to not generate income and same concept to Walmart and

Mckinsey.

5. The chapter argues that Apple's key capabilities are product

design and product development that combine hardware

technology, software engineering, aesthetics, ergonomics, and

cognitive awareness to create products with a superior user

interface and unrivalled market appeal. How easy would it be

for Samsung to replicate these capabilities of Apple?

It has been seen apple phones being the first choice of many people. All these is

due to its advance technology in way of hardware and software. In addition, also the ease

of use. But really, is there any advance of technology from what we do not know of. The

answer is no. What apple has done is just to improve the existing technology. For Samsung

to get ahead of apple’s phones, they need to take care of just simple items. (El-Amrawy et

al, 2015)

I think Samsung can catch up to Apple if they improve their camera software more

because the sole reason why people choose the Apple Phones is because of it’s advance

camera software. We all know that the pixels on Samsung are far advance to iPhones but

the Software of Samsung is not that great causing the images or videos producing by the

phones of Samsung not that great.

6. Given the profile of Icelandair's resources and capabilities

outlined in Strategic Capsule 5.8, how might Icelandair best

exploit its resources and capabilities to (a) expand

passenger numbers traveling to and from Iceland and (b)

profitably grow its share of the North Atlantic market?

(a) The Icelandair can expand the number of traveling by working on their

weakness first. The weakness that I noticed is the location network and the

landing slots of it.

(b) A business can increase their profitability by deducting the cost of the

production or the operation. Also, as a business major, they could also do

marketing campaigns so they could get a lot of customers buy it and will result

of increase in revenue.

7. Apply resource and capability analysis to your own business

school. Begin by identifying the resources and capabilities

relevant to success in the market for business education,

appraise the resources and capabilities of your school, and

then make strategy recommendations regarding such matters as

the programs to be offered and the overall positioning and

differentiation of the school and its offerings.

Based on the data I gathered with the internet, Capabilities relevant to success in

the market for business education might include: Admissions capability, Teaching

capability, Research capability (as indicated by publications and impact on business

practices), Career management capability (ability to secure jobs for graduates), External

relations capability (especially corporate relations), Leadership (ability of dean and top

management team to define and implement strategy, motivate employees, and manage

operations). Some of the key resources that these capabilities require include, Financial

resources, Location, Faculty (skills; reputation), Students, Facilities, Reputation (status and

brand equity of the institution), Alumni.

As a student in New Era University since Senior High School, I noticed that the

university is kind of old school. For example the use of chit is still paper but other

universities already have an E-Chit (Electronic Chit). I think it’s one of the things that

needs the university to update. The E-Chit is also one of the topic on my research paper

before.
