THE PROBLEM –ITS BACKGROUND

Polytechnic University of the Philippines has evolved through its changes, as a

state university PUP believes that education is an instrument for the development of the

citizenry and for the enhancement of the nations building. It believes the meaningful

growth and transformation of the country are best achieved in an atmosphere of

brotherhood, peace freedom, justice and nationalist-oriented education imbued with the

spirit of humanist internationalism. This is the philosophy of the Polytechnic University

of the Philippines that gives every PUPian an inspiration to their lives.

Provides Highest Quality of comprehensive and global education and community

services and accessible to all students, Filipinos or foreign alike. It offers undergraduate

and graduate programs that are responsive to the changing needs of the students to enable

them to lead productive and meaningful lives. The University commits itself to

democratize access to educational opportunities. Promote science and technology

consciousness and develop relevant expertise and competence among all members of the

academic stressing their importance in building a truly independent and sovereign

Philippines. Emphasizes the unrestrained and unremitting search for truth and its defense,

as well as the advancement of moral and spiritual values, promote awareness and of our

beneficial and relevant cultural heritage. Develop in the students and faculty and values

of self-discipline, love and country and social consciousness and the need to defend

Human rights. Provide its students and faculty with a liberal arts-based understanding and

appreciation of life and to the total development of the individual. Make the students and

faculty to be aware of technological, social, as well as political and economic problems

and encourage them to contribute to the realization of nationalist industrialization and

economic development of the country. Use and propagate the National Language and

other Philippine languages and develop proficiency in English and other foreign

languages required by the student’s field of specialization. Promote Intellectual

leadership and sustain a humane and technologically advance academic community

where people of diverse ideologies of work and learn together to attain academic research

excellence in a continually changing world. Build learning community in touch with the

main current of political economic and cultural life throughout the world; a community

enriched by the presence of a significant numbers of international students; and a

community supported by new technologies and facilities for active participation in the

creation and use of information and knowledge on a global scale.

Its strategies are to broaden opportunities for the intellectual qualified or

scientifically inclined through school fees within the reach of even the socio-

economically disadvantaged students. It strives to promote the welfare of its members

through the improvement of salary levels, security of tenure and through scholarships,

training and development programs, better working conditions, as well as the rational use

of time and resources. Undertake vigorous efforts towards institutional linkage,

particularly in the area of common concern like training and retraining equipment and

audio-visual use, etc.

Formulate and implement new and relevant curricula and at the same tome

supplement curricular activities with carefully planned co-curricular ones. Place emphasis

on the need to improve indigenous Philippines science and technology and research and

stress above all continued and regular improvement of the content and quality of PUP

education, together with the orienting course offerings towards Filipino manpower

requirements and entrepreneurial needs.

PUP is one of the leading universities that give high quality education, to be a

total university PUP foster high quality campus environment, strategize and

institutionalize income-generating projects, strengthen research, publications and creative

works, model quality management and fiscal responsibilities, improve sense of

community involvement and linkages, institutionalize principles of academic freedom

and responsibility, promote academic excellence in student/faculty performance

nationally and internationally, nurture and enrich cultural heritage, integrate Information

and Communication Technology (ICT) with instruction, research, services and

production and evolve wholesome living and working environment for faculty,

employees and student.

This study focuses on the existence of Computer Establishments inside PUP,

since we are in a technological environment, people these days are more into technology,

they rely most of their studies on computers. Many of them prefer surfing the net than

searching books on libraries because books can be seen now on the net. That maybe one

reason this students prefer visiting computer shops than libraries. The researcher wants to

know how computer shops exist inside PUP, can this computer shops help students? Do

computer shop owners own this establishments or PUP? How would this computer shops

help students in PUP? do this computer shops have a positive response to the students,

this are just some questions that the researcher wants to answer. So the researcher come

up with a research paper entitled “A Study on the Existence of Computer

Establishments in PUP”.

Statement of the Problem

The Researcher will answer the following questions:

1. Since when did computer establishments enter PUP campus?

2. How did PUP introduce computer shops inside PUP?

3. How much they pay for rent inside PUP?

4. What is the difference between computer establishments inside PUP and

outside pup to students?

Scope and Delimitation

This study will look into the existence of computer establishments inside PUP

only; this is done to be understood by PUPians on how PUP has computer shops inside

the campus. This will look into the response of the students if these computer

establishments help them to their studies.

Definition of terms

The Researcher will define the following words and terms:

3. Internet - Defined by Castells The Internet is a global system of interconnected

computer networks that use the standardized Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP). It is a

network of networks that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business,

and government networks of local to global scope that are linked by copper wires, fiber-

optic cables, wireless connections, and other technologies. The Internet carries a vast

array of information resources and services, most notably the inter-linked hypertext

documents of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support electronic

mail, in addition to popular services such as online chat, file transfer and file sharing,

online gaming, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) person-to-person communication

via voice and video.

In addition, Strokes defines internet as the physical network that links computers

across the globe. It consists of the infrastructure of network servers and communication

links between them, which are used to hold and transport the vast amount of information

on the Internet. The Internet enables transfer of messages and transactions between

connected computers worldwide.

According to Donaldson, internet is a powerful tool for providing information and is an

important means of buyer-seller communication.

Importance of the Study

The researcher cited some people who will benefit from this study to serve the

following individuals and Organization:

For the Students, This study will contribute by sharing relevant information on

how PUP have different computer shops inside the campus. It is wise to have these

establishments inside the campus because it is convenient and it is closer to the students,

they don’t have to go outside the campus to use computers. This would help them to cope

up in a fast-phase world in new technology and keeping them updated and develop

computer skills. It will give them more protection from people outside the campus.

The University, this will give reference to people who wants to learn more about

the University, adding more knowledge about the university. The university fulfills its

mission and vision by applying convenience to students. This would complement the

university because of this programs that benefit students and faculty members.

The community would benefit from this study by applying these establishments to

every school, university in the Philippines, giving the community more knowledge about

the current status of the universities here in the Philippines.

This study would also benefit our country because of application of these

programs in the 3rd world country, giving the country an advantage in terms of education,

making Philippines a multicultural country, making Filipinos familiar to technologies,

information and communication technology.
