Capstone Summary

Lynea Preston created 14 unique technology course topics and 28 lesson plans for a STEM summer camp. She housed all the content on a website to provide the materials to teachers. She learned about writing lesson plans and preparing to teach through developing this project. The website allows teachers to easily find the materials and integrate them into their own classrooms. Lynea hopes to continue developing free resources for teachers to support technology integration in their teaching.

2019 Capstone Project Summary

STEMazing Technology
By: Lynea Preston

For my final project I created course topics and lesson plans for technology classes that I
will be teaching for a community STEM summer camp. There are 14 unique courses and 28
lesson plans created for 1st-3rd and 4th-8th grade students. All of the content created is housed
on a website that I developed with hopes of providing the lesson plans and materials to teachers
for implementation in their own classrooms.
My journey to creating this project was very useful and I learned a great deal about
writing lesson plans and preparing to teach a week long class that I created. I was able to take
what I have learned about learning theory, teaching methodologies and technology from this
program and integrate all of these components into my very own courses to offer to kids learning
over their summer break.
The creation of the website brought me back to learning about web design all of the ways
to ensure that your website is legible, uncluttered, and easy to navigate. Bringing everything that
I have learned about creating websites to this project made it much easier to focus on the content
of the courses and create a streamlined web design that will be easy for teachers to find what
they need. Originally I stated in my proposal that I would be using Adobe Spark, but it was not
conducive to the web design that I was looking for and I ended up switching to Google Sites.
Using Google Sites was a great tool for this project and the only difficulties that I encountered
were that adding Google documents to the website would not allow me to have users create a
copy instead of accessing directly in my Google Drive. Although, Google Sites was a great
experience for teaching my final course that I created on how to make your own website using
Google Sites. This will be a great reference to use in the classroom!
Unfortunately, I was not able to implement the courses before the completion of this
course, but I was able to share the content with teachers at the school I currently work at school
and they stated they would be very interested in integrating these week long courses into their
curriculum lessons for major projects. They believe that the students would find it fun and
engaging to learn a new program that they have never used before while still completing the
required materials for the school year. I hope to help teachers for the 2019-2020 school year
integrate these tools and lesson plans to make it their own showing them just how easy it can be
to learn alongside their students.
Overall, this project is going to be instrumental for my success in teaching 28 courses
during this summer position I have accepted. I have aspirations to continue developing free
content for teachers to access and use for their classrooms. I believe it is imperative to support
teachers in their efforts to incorporate technology in their everyday teaching methods. Doing this
will ensure that they are keeping up with the new programs and strategies in problem solving so
they are able to effectively support the students.
