Whoever You Are

1st Grade
Olivia Forsberg, Tiandra Dodd, and Xavier Juarez
Summary of Children’s Book:
Whoever You Are by Mem Fox
Children all over the world may not
look the same or even speak the same
language, but inside they are the same.
Everyday no matter where children are
from, they laugh and cry, sleep and eat,
play and learn. Whoever You Are
encourages us to be accepting of all
our differences, acknowledge the
similarities, and be able to celebrate
both.
Social Justice Topic - Respect for Others
The students gain respect for the history and characteristics of people different from themselves. By building on the
natural empathy of children, teachers encourage students to care about “unfair” conditions that have affected others.

Our book covers the differences amongst people around the world no matter where they live, what they look like,
and what they do or eat. Our activities will emphasize the importance of what makes people who they are and
recognizing that people need to be treated fairly no matter of their background or other differences from one
another. We can then tie this back into our classroom and articulate the importance of creating a safe community for
the classroom.

Whoever You Are- Activities
❏ All About Me Poem- Students will be asked to create a poem by
filling out the information required located on SeeSaw. This will
align with our multicultural children’s book by allowing students
to use their culture to fill out the poem. Once students have
completed their poem, they will post it to SeeSaw for their peers
to read.

❏ Despite Our Differences Worksheet- Students will be asked to

participate in an activity in breakout rooms on Zoom. Students
will be partnered up and ask each other the questions listed. This
will align with our multicultural children’s book by identifying
students similarities that we discussed in the book. After, each
pair will share similarities they found in a class discussion on
Zoom.

Empowering Students
All About Me Poem
❏ To start the activity, we are going to have students recognize and record details that make them who they are. For
example, what their favorite food is, what they like, and what their favorite color is.

❏ Once students do this individually they will be partnered up with another student and then complete another worksheet
with their partner that discusses their similarities and differences.

★ This allows for students to have that conversation of diversity in the classroom while learning more about their
peers. We are going to help our students move toward social justice action by having students get to know one
another and possibly learn about a culture that they are unfamiliar with.

Whoever You Are by Mem Fox

❏ With the children’s book we are able to have that conversation of “whoever you are” in our classroom and how we are all
the same despite where people come from. This will begin the discussion of how we all deserve respect and how we need
to show respect to everyone even if they are “different” than us.
Lesson Plan - Introduction
➔ First part of the lesson will be introducing acceptance and diversity. (3 mins)
◆ Ask students for the definition of acceptance and diversity to see where their knowledge
is at.
◆ We will talk about the definitions and how we see diversity every day.
➔ Next, we will do a read aloud of the story Whoever You Are by Mem Fox to the class.
(7 mins)
◆ Questions to ask after the read aloud:
◆ How did the story make you feel?
◆ What type of things in the book do you see in our own classroom?
◆ We would continue to ask questions based off of students answers to previous questions
to keep the conversation going.
Lesson Plan Cont. - Activities
➔ Activity 1: All About Me Poem (7 mins)
◆ Students will be asked to participate and completing a poem during class after being read
Whoever You Are by Mem Fox. (5 mins)
◆ Online Group Discussion via Zoom- Students will have the opportunity to share aloud their
poem they created.
◆ Students will post their completed All About Me poem on SeeSaw for their peers to see. (2 mins)
➔ Activity 2: Despite Our Differences (8 mins)
◆ Students will be paired off in 2’s to complete the following worksheet through breakout rooms
via Zoom.
◆ Students will use the worksheet Despite Our Differences to find similarities between them and
their peer. (5 mins)
◆ Online Group Discussion via Zoom- Students will have the opportunity to share aloud what their
group found to be similar between both of them. (3 mins)
◆ Students will post their completed Despite Our Differences worksheet on SeeSaw for their peers
to see.
Lesson Plan Cont. - Exit Ticket
➔ Exit Ticket: Despite our Differences Illustrations (10 mins)
◆ Students will create a picture that is based off of the information they have gathered
through the two activities. Students will trace the outline of one of the two partners. The
students will then fill in the body with the interests, character traits, or anything else that
the partners have in common. The students can either write the interests or draw the
objects that they came up with. The teacher will then hang the different outlines of
students around the classroom.
Teaching Students Who Aren’t Able To Go Online
● If students are not able to be online, we will provide a take home packet that
will cover diversity through readings and activities. Parents would be able to
pick up the packet from school. Parents can call the teacher or email the
teacher if they have any questions.
