According to the U.S. Department of Education, The National Insitutes of Health (NIH)
percent. Fifty-one percent of all the students enrolled in the nation's special education
programs are classified as learning disabled)." Unfortunately, this diagnosis is often viewed
as a hindrance rather than an opportunity for growth and understanding. Students that have
learning disabilities have one commonality, a processing deficit that interferes with their
and, thus, has a unique learning style. Approximately 20 to 30 percent of the school-aged
population remembers what is heard; 40 percent recalls well visually the things that are seen
or read; many must write or use their fingers in some manipulative way to help them
remember basic facts; other people cannot internalize information or skills unless they use
them in real-life activities such as actually writing a letter to learn the correct format
(Teaching Students to Read Through Their Individual Learning Styles, Marie Carbo, Rita
Dunn, and Kenneth Dunn; Prentice-Hall, 1986, p.13). One of the most accepted
understandings of learning styles is that student learning styles fall into three categories
according to The VAK Learning Styles Model developed by psychologists in the 1920s . The
VAK learning style uses the three main sensory receivers: Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic
(movement) to determine the dominant learning style. VAK is derived from the accelerated
learning world and seems to be about the most popular model nowadays due to its simplicity.
First of all, Visual Learning Style focuses on the visual acuity. It means that concrete
evidences must be shown in advance so that they understand. This style of learning relies on
vision or previewing the evidence to then be able to believe it. Visual learners have two sub-
written language, such as reading and writing tasks. They remember what has been written
down, even if they do not read it more than once. They like to write down directions and pay
better attention to lectures if they watch them. Learners who are visual-spatial usually have
difficulty with the written language and do better with charts, demonstrations, videos, and
other visual materials. They easily visualize faces and places by using their imagination and
seldom get lost in new surroundings. It is supposed to integrate this style into the learning
environment.
In addition, there is also another learning style. It is Auditory Learning Style which relies on
hearing to understand and remember. The characteristics of this learning model actually puts
hearing as the primary tool of absorbing information or knowledge. The learners must hear
the information, then they can remember and understand the information. The first
characteristic of a person who has this learning style is that all information can only be
absorbed through hearing. Second, they have difficulty in absorbing information in the form
The final learning style is Kinesthetic Learning Style which requires that the individual touch
something which provides certain information so that one can remember it. Thos who have
this learning style excel faster in a hands-on environment. They use their senses to work on
new skills and rely heavily on muscle memory. Members of this category often use
demonstrations, simulations and case studies to help them improve. It also has two sub-
channels: kinesthetic (movement) and tactile (touch). They tend to lose their concentrations if
there is little or no external stimulation or movement. When listening to lectures, they may
want to take notes for the sake of moving their hands. When reading, they like to scan the
material first, and then focus in on the details (get the big picture first). They typically use
coloring high lighters and take notes by drawing pictures, diagrams, or doodling. To integrate
In conclusion, kinds of learning styles can be clearly classified into Visual Learning Style,
Auditory Learning Style, and Kinesthetic Learning Style. These kinds of learning styles have
different senses which are relied on. They are sight, hearing and touch. Each learners has
