Swimming Pool Calculation

This document calculates various parameters for the design of a 370 square meter public swimming pool with an average depth of 1.7 meters located in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. It determines the pool volume, number of water inlets and pumps, sizing of supply and suction pipes, required filter area, heating and cooling loads, pump head, and lighting requirements. The pool will use 2 pumps with a total flow rate of 3.49 cubic meters per minute, require 15 inlets and 4 outlets, and need a 342.9 kW heater.

According To International Swimming Pool Code for every 25 m2 surface area need 1 inlet
NO. Water Inlets = 14.8 inlets
So Get the No. Of inlets = 15 inlets

According to Type of Swimming Pool Turn Over Period Will be Selected

Swimming Pool Type Public Pools up to 25m Long With a 1m Shallow End
Enter No. of Turn Over Period = 3 Time / Day

Get Swimming Pool Pump Capacity = Pool Volume / ( Turn Over Period * 60 )

No.of filter required 2.93974 3 Filter

Heating Calculation for swimming pools

Heater is required for heating purposes at winter seasons if required take inconsideration that
it's not particle to heat the pool without covers at coldest winter months
For calculation purposes the following conditions to be considered:-
The recommended Pool water temperature is around 28 º C deg.
Outdoor air condition : 29 / 10 deg º C DB/WB –summer condition, max 122deg F (32 C)
: 21/ 10 deg º C DB/WB -winter condition
From SPATA p5, Sec3, the Average Daily heat loss (DH) in KWhr / m2 of pool surface area

Correction Value Will be Changed According to type of Swimming Pool And it`s Location
Swimming Pool Type and Location Outdoor / Exposed Pool Location
correction value to be used in calculation = 1.25
48 hours
hours per day available for heating
No. of hours per day available for heating = 48 hours

= Heater required Pool Volume * 1000 * ( Tc2 - Tc1) / ( 860 * Avaliable Heating Hour)
= 629* 1000 ( 28 - 10 ) / 860 * 48
= 342.9 Kw

Cooling Calculation for Swimming Pools

(NO NEED COOLING IS REQ. FOR BAHIR DAR WEATER SINCE T<36 C )
For cooling purpose in summer seasons chilled water is required to cooling the water temperature
in summer to recommended temperatures
The recommended Pool water temperature is around 28 deg º C
Outdoor air condition :32 /10 deg º C DB/ WB - summer condition , Max 122 deg º F
: 24 / 10 deg º C DB/ WB - winter condition
During summer time the outdoor air temperature will be around 30 deg º C and hence the water
temperature will be the same
So to estimate the cooling load required for the chiller to reduce water temperature to 28 deg º C is zero
will be zero

hours per day available for cooling 0

No. of hours per day available = 0 hours

The first part is the cooling load required to reduce the water temperature
to 28 deg º C as following

Q1 = V * Cp * P * (d T ) / Time Required for cooling

where :-
V= volume of pool
Cp = specific heat of water 4.18 (KJ/Kg.C)
P = specific heat of water = 1 Kg/L
d T = temperature difference

Q1 = 629 * 4.186 * 1 * ( 30 - 28 ) / ( 3600 * 0 )

= #DIV/0! Kw
The second part is the cooling load required to over come the heat lose from the water
surfaces of swimming pool

Q2 = CF *DH * Pool surface area / Time Required for cooling

where :-
CF= Correction Factor
DH = average daily loss from swimming pool surface

from SPATA tables there is no information about heat loss from pool areas the horen africa area condition
the avaliable data only at 15deg º C out door temp which is = 3.48 Kwh/m2
Assuming linearity condition the excepeted heat loss at 30deg º C = (30/15)x3.48 = 10.44 Kwh/m2

Q2 = 1.25 * 370 * 10.44 / 0

= #DIV/0! Kw

So the Total Ciller Capacity will be = Q1 + Q2

= #DIV/0! #DIV/0!
= #DIV/0! Kw
= #DIV/0! Btu/hr
= #DIV/0! TR

Pump head calculation for swimming pools

Heater pressure drop = 10 ft
Filter pressure drop = 5 ft
Chlorination auto pilot unit = 2 ft
Pipes and fittings losses = 7 ft
Static head heat pump = 5 ft

Pump head = 34.8 ft

Pump HP = 8.1 HP

Swimming Pool Lighting :

For lighting we need about 5.4 watt to 16.30 watt for each 1m2
Take the watt required for each 1m2 = 10 Watt
Total watt required = 3700 Watt
for lamp have capacity of = 300 Watt
No. of lamp required = 12 Lamp

Swimming Pool Conglusion

Pump Capacity 461 GPM

Pump Head 15 PSI
Pump HP 8.1 HP
Balance tank V. 36 m3
Filter 3 Filter with Diameter 130 cm
Heater Capacity 342.9 Kw
Cooling Capacity #DIV/0! TR
Lighting 12 Lamp, Each one 300 Watt
