THE LANGUAGE OF MATHEMATICS
I. Translate each of the following phrases into mathematical expressions/sentences. Use x, y, or z as
your variables.

1. The sum of a number and 10. x + 10

2. The product of two numbers. xy
3. The product of -1 and a number. -1y
4. One –half times the sum of two numbers. ½ (y + z)
5. Twice a number. 2x
6. Five less than a number. z-5
7. A number, less 8. x-8
8. Six more than a number. x-6
9. A number, plus 6. x+6
10. The square of a number.
x2
11. Four times the square of a number. 4 ( x 2)
12. One-half of a number is 5. ½ (x) = 5
13. Three less than twice a number. 2x - 3
14. Five more than three times a number. 3x + 5
15. The square of the sum of 5 and a number. ¿

II. Identify each as an expression or sentence, open sentence or not, equation or inequality.

1. 6x+1 = expression

2. 5(4)>15+2 = sentence, not open sentence, inequality

3. 2 = expression

4. c-5=7 = sentence, open sentence, equation

5. 75+6x=42 = sentence, open sentence, equation

III. Identify the following statement as propositions or not. Write P if it propositions and Np if not. Then if it
is propositions determine its negation.

Example: Mamamoo is a four-member kpop group. (P)

Negation: Mamamoo is not a four-member kpop group.

1. What time is it? (Np)

2. President Duterte is the President of the Philippines. (P)

Negation: President Duterte is not the President of the Philippines.

3. Ouch! (Np)

4. All birds can fly. (P)

Negation: Some birds cannot fly.

5. 1+0 = 10 (P)
Negation: 1 + 0 ≠ 10

6. Sit down! (Np)

7. x+1=2 (P)
Negation: x + 1 ≠ 2

8. No human beings are mortal. (P)

Negation: Some human beings are mortal.

9. Stop! (Np)

10. Always wear your mask (P)

Negation: It is not true that always wear you mask.

IV. Translate each symbolic notation into statements,

Let p represent “It is raining.”
q represents “The streets are wet.”
Then determine whether the translated statements as TRUE or FALSE.

1. ~p: = It is not raining. TRUE

2. ~q: = The streets are not wet. TRUE

3. ~𝑝⋁𝑞 = It is not raining or the streets are wet. TRUE

4. 𝑝 → 𝑞 = If it is raining then the streets are wet. TRUE

5. 𝑝 ∧ 𝑞 = It is raining and the streets are wet. FALSE

6. ~𝑝 → ~𝑞 = If it is not raining then the streets are not wet. TRUE

7. 𝑞 → 𝑝 = If the streets are wet then it is raining. TRUE

V. Complete the truth table below.

1. ~𝑞 → (~𝑝⋁𝑞)
p q ~p ~q ~𝑝⋁𝑞 ~𝑝⋁𝑞
T T F F T T
T F F T F F
F T T F T T
F F T T T T

2. (𝑝 ∧ 𝑞) ∨ ~𝑝
p q ~p ~𝑝⋁𝑞 (𝑝 ∧ 𝑞) ∨ ~𝑝

T T F T T
T F F F F
F T T F T
F F T F T

3. [𝑝 ∧ (𝑞 ∨ ~𝑟)] → (~𝑝 ∧ 𝑞)
p q r ~p ~r 𝑞 ∨ ~𝑟 ~𝑝 ∧ 𝑞 𝑝 ∧ (𝑞 ∨ ~𝑟) [𝑝 ∧ (𝑞 ∨ ~𝑟)] → (~𝑝 ∧ 𝑞)
