For the parent/adult facilitator:

Welcome to Module 2 of the Grade 4 English Supplementary


Learning Materials for the First Quarter, which focuses on the skill of using
the dictionary, thesaurus, and online sources to find the meaning of
words.

This module was collaboratively developed by educators from the


public schools to assist your child to meet the standards set by the K to 12
Curriculum while overcoming personal, social, and economic constraints in
schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners in guided and


independent learning activities that they can do at their own pace and time.
Furthermore, this material also aims to help learners acquire the needed
21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and
circumstances.

As a parent/adult facilitator, you are expected to help the young


learner in using this module. It would also be helpful for you to keep track
of the learner’s progress while allowing them to manage their own learning.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they
do the tasks included in the module.

How about online sources?


An online source is any material that can be found on the
world wide web. Some are useful for getting the meaning of words.
These are also called electronic, web or internet sources.

What is It

Now you are going to learn more about getting the


meaning of words using a dictionary, thesaurus and/or
online resources.

What is a dictionary?
It is a reference material made up of entry words listed in
alphabetical order. Each entry states how words are pronounced
and what the words mean. Since words are arranged
alphabetically, locating words is easy. Two guide words are
printed at the top of each dictionary page.

Guidewords help us find words on the page faster. The guideword


printed on the left side is the first word, while the guideword on
the right side is the last word on the page.

Entry Words are the words arranged alphabetically with meanings
and pronunciation. We can also find the part of speech of each
word.

Study the sample dictionary pages below and read the details to
understand what the contents are:

Online sources are found on the Internet. Here the steps you need
to do to find the meaning of words on the Internet.
1. Turn on your computer or laptop and connect to the Internet.
2. Think of a word you want to define or you want to search for.
3. Use Google or Dictionary.com then, type in the word you’re
looking for in the search engine.
4. The search engine will process.
5. The search engine will return the word with definition,
pronunciation, parts of speech.
