SECTION 15736 - SELF-CONTAINED AIR-CONDITIONING UNITS 50 kW (15 TONS) AND


SMALLER

PART 1 - GENERAL

0.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including Conditions of Contract and
Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

0.2 SUMMARY

A. This Section includes packaged air-conditioning units with refrigerant compressors and
controls, intended for indoor installations, with [externally mounted air-cooled
condensers] [integral air-cooled condensers].

B. Related Sections include the following:

1. Division 15 Section "Mechanical Vibration Controls and Seismic Restraints" for


isolation pads, spring isolators, and seismic restraints.
2. Division 15 Section "HVAC Instrumentation and Controls" for control devices not
packaged with units.
3. Division 15 Section "Sequence of Operation" for control sequences affecting
operation of units.

0.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Include rated capacities; shipping, installed, and operating weights; furnished
specialties; and accessories for each type of product indicated.

1. Sample Warranty: Copy of manufacturer's proposed warranty, stating obligations,


remedies, limitations, and exclusions.

B. Shop Drawings: Diagram power, signal, and control wiring and differentiate between
manufacturer-installed and field-installed wiring.

C. Samples for Initial Selection: Manufacturer's color charts consisting of units or sections of
units showing the full range of colors available for units with factory-applied color finishes.

D. Field Test and Commissioning Reports: As specified in "Field Quality Control" and
"Commissioning" Articles in Part 3 of this Section. Indicate and interpret test results for
compliance with performance requirements.

E. Maintenance Data: For self-contained air-conditioning units to include in maintenance


manuals specified in Division 1.

F. Warranties: Warranties specified in this Section.

0.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in latest
and relevant IEC standard, by a testing agency acceptable to the Engineer.

B. Paint finish shall be suitable for hot and humid climates. Unit shall be capable and suitable
of working at outdoor ambient temperature of 50 deg. C .

0.5 COORDINATION

A. Coordinate size and location of concrete bases for units. Cast anchor-bolt inserts into bases.
Concrete, reinforcement, and formwork are specified in Division 3 Section "Cast-in-Place
Concrete."

B. Coordinate size, location, and connection details with roof curbs, equipment supports, and
roof penetrations specified in Division 7 Section "Roof Accessories."

0.6 WARRANTY

A. Manufacturer's Warranty: Provide written warranty, signed by the manufacturer agreeing to


repair or replace components of self-contained air-conditioning units that fail in materials or
workmanship within specified warranty period.

B. Warranty Period: [Five] <Insert other number> years from date of Substantial
Completion.

0.7 EXTRA MATERIALS

A. Furnish extra materials described below that match products installed and that are packaged
with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents.

1. Filters: One set of filters for each unit.


2. Fan Belts: One set of belts for each unit.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

0.1 GENERAL

A. Listing of Product Installations shall be submitted for packaged air-conditioning units


showing a minimum of 5 installed units, similar to those proposed for use, that have been in
successful service for a minimum period of 5 years. List shall include purchaser, address of
installation, service organization, and date of installation.

B. Installation Drawings shall be submitted for packaged air-conditioning units in accordance


with referenced standards in this section.

A. Description: Self-contained, factory-assembled and -wired unit; consisting of cabinet,


compressor, evaporator fan, evaporator coil, air filters, and controls; and fully charged with
refrigerant and oil.

1. Condenser: [Integral air-cooled condenser] [Remote air-cooled condenser].

B. Disconnect Switch: Factory mounted [in control panel] [on equipment].

0.3 CABINET

A. Frame and Panels: Structural-steel frame with galvanized steel panels with factory applied,
baked-enamel finish in color selected by the Engineer from manufacturer's standard range,
and with access doors or panels.

B. Insulation: Minimum 13 mm thick, acoustic duct liner on cabinet interior and control panel.

C. Drain Pan: Stainless steel, with connection for drain; insulated with polystyrene..

D. Discharge Plenum: Cabinet extension with directional louvers.

0.4 EVAPORATOR FAN

A. Material: Galvanized steel.

B. Configuration: Double-width, double-inlet, forward-curved centrifugal fan; statically and


dynamically balanced.

C. Drive: [Belt, with fan mounted on permanently lubricated bearings] [Direct, with fan
and motor resiliently mounted].

D. Fan Sheaves: Steel sheaves, dynamically balanced, bored to fit shafts and keyed.

E. Motor Sheave: Variable and adjustable pitch selected so that required rpm are obtained
when set at midposition.

F. Rating: As recommended by the manufacturer or a minimum of one and one-half times


nameplate rating of motor.

G. Motors: Multispeed, PSC type.

0.5 COMPRESSOR

A. Description: Hermetically sealed, 3600 rpm maximum, and resiliently mounted with
positive lubrication and internal motor protection.

B. Compressor Type: [Reciprocating] [Scroll].

0.6 EVAPORATOR COIL

A. Direct-Expansion Coil: Seamless copper tubes expanded into aluminum fins.

B. Refrigeration Circuit: A separate circuit for each compressor, with externally equalized
thermal-expansion valve, filter-dryer, and charging valves.

0.7 REMOTE AIR-COOLED CONDENSER

A. Description: Factory assembled and tested; consisting of condenser coil, fans and motors,
and operating controls; suitable for roof mounting.

1. Condenser Coil: Aluminum-fin copper tube with integral subcooler; leak tested to
2930 kPa.
2. Condenser Fans: Direct-drive propeller type with permanently lubricated motors
with built-in thermal-overload protection.
3. Refrigerant Line Kits: Annealed-copper suction and liquid lines that are factory
cleaned, dried, pressurized, and sealed; insulated suction line; flared fittings at
evaporator end, no fitting at condenser end; and service valves for both suction and
liquid lines.
4. Corrosion-Resistant Treatment: Phenolic coating applied in multiple dips and baked.
Corrosion treatment for condenser coils shall be factory applied.

0.8 INTEGRAL AIR-COOLED CONDENSER

A. Description: Factory assembled and tested; consisting of condenser coil, fans and motors,
and cabinet.

1. Condenser Coil: Aluminum-fin copper tube with integral subcooler; leak tested to
2930 kPa.
2. Condenser Fan: Direct-drive propeller type with permanently lubricated motor with
built-in thermal-overload protection.
3. Corrosion-Resistant Treatment: Phenolic coating applied in multiple dips and baked.
Corrosion treatment for condenser coils shall be factory applied.

0.9 AIR FILTERS

A. Permanent Filters: 25 mm thick, washable type, panel filters.

0.10 CONTROLS

A. Control Package: Factory wired, including contactor, high- and low-pressure cutouts,
internal-winding thermostat for compressor, control-circuit transformer, and noncycling
reset relay. Control system shall be factory equipped with all necessary interface
communication to BMS on Bacnet protocol.

B. Time-Delay Relay: Five-minute delay to prevent compressor cycling.

C. Adjustable Thermostat: [Unit mounted] [Remote] to control the following:

1. Supply fan.
2. Compressor.
3. Condenser.

D. System Selector Switch: [off-cool] [Off -auto-cool].

E. Fan Control Switch: Auto-on.

0.11 VENTILATION OPTIONS

A. Barometric Outside-Air Damper: Adjustable-blade damper allowing induction of up to 25


percent outside air when evaporator fan is running.

B. Motorized Outside-Air Damper: Motorized, two-position blade damper allowing induction


of up to 25 percent outside air; with spring-return, low-voltage damper motor.

C. Economizer: Damper assembly allowing induction of up to 100 percent outside air to


maintain a selected mixed-air temperature; and exhaust damper and spring-return, low-
voltage, modulating damper motor with minimum position adjustment.

D. Energy-Recovery Ventilator: Assembly of desiccant-coated, heat-recovery wheels and


centrifugal exhaust fans to transfer approximately 67 percent of the difference between the
sensible and latent heat of outside and exhaust air.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

0.1 INSTALLATION

A. Equipment shall be installed in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.

B. Install units level and plumb.

C. Anchor units to structure.

D. Isolation: Mount cabinet and remote air-cooled condenser on [rubber-in-shear pads for
mounting under base of unit] [spring isolators for mounting under base of unit].

1. Minimum Static Deflection: 25 mm.

E. Install seismic restraints.

0.2 CONNECTIONS

A. Piping installation requirements are specified in other Division 15 Sections. Drawings


indicate general arrangement of piping, fittings, and specialties.

B. Install piping adjacent to unit to allow service and maintenance.

C. Unless otherwise indicated, connect piping with unions and shutoff valves to allow units to
be disconnected without draining piping. Refer to piping system Sections for specific valve
and specialty arrangements.

D. Ground equipment.

1. Tighten electrical connectors and terminals according to manufacturer's published


torque-tightening values. If manufacturer's torque values are not indicated, use those
specified in UL 486A and UL 486B.

0.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Installation Inspection: Engage a factory-authorized service representative to inspect field-


assembled components and equipment installation, including piping and electrical
connections, and to prepare a written report of inspection.

B. Leak Test: After installation, charge system and test for leaks. Repair leaks and retest until
no leaks exist.

C. Operational Test: After electrical circuitry has been energized, start units to confirm proper
motor rotation and unit operation. Remove malfunctioning units, replace with new
components, and retest.

D. Test and adjust controls and safeties. Replace damaged and malfunctioning controls and
equipment.

0.4 COMMISSIONING

A. Engage a factory-authorized service representative to perform startup service and report


results in writing.

B. Verify that units are installed and connected according to the Contract Documents.

C. Lubricate bearings, adjust belt tension, and change filters.

D. Perform startup checks according to manufacturer's written instructions and do the


following:

1. Fill out manufacturer's checklists.


2. Check for unobstructed airflow over coils.
3. Check operation of condenser capacity-control device.
4. Verify that vibration isolation devices and flexible connectors dampen vibration
transmission to structure.

0.5 DEMONSTRATION

A. Engage a factory-authorized service representative to train the Employer's maintenance


personnel to adjust, operate, and maintain self-contained air-conditioning units. Refer to
Division 1 Section "[Demonstration and Training] [Closeout Procedures]."

1. Schedule at least four (4) hours of training.
