This course has been, to say the least, an eye-opening, whirlwind of information that has really made me
take a close look about how I am living and the ecological footprint I am leaving behind. Sadly, this does
not come down to only one person´s contribution; it is a collective effortthat needs to be taken into
consideration. Before this week I did not think it was possible for a city to create mandatory effort for its
citizens to abide by and create positive change that is a model for the world to follow. I found this very
useful to be able to read what is happening around the world and also to be able to research and share
what I have going on around me locally. Had I not taken this course, I would have continued living my
life negligent as to the process of damage being done and the environmental repercussions they cause.
Having the opportunity to holistically go back and evaluate my learning over the past 8 weeks, I think
from each unit I will take with the following: It is mandatory that Mexico pushes towards a defined
recycling program because currently there is no major push from the government, state or federal, to
educate the population about this importance. One of Mexico´s main industries that has been suffering
over the past decade is tourism and recreation. The pristine virgin beaches of Cancun have been
anything but due to the over-exploitation to build beach resorts. Because we have accelerated and
forced the Earth to change in extreme ways populations, primarily in impoverished regions have been
forced to move onto inhabitable lands with poor unfertile soil. It was shocking to learn that the number
surpasses 1 billion habitants. For Mexican farmers, I think that by breeding seeds in order to produce
more fruitful crops that are resistent to drought, pests, and disease is a very profitable program. Since
Mexican farmers currently receive no financial support and only earn based on what they sell from their
crops, they are required to produce in large yeilds with minimal loss, waste, and buyer rejection. Air
pollution is an ever-growing problem even after we have become conscious of it and placed it at the
forefront of environmental problems. We can no longer be concerned what our individual country is
contributing to the global problem of air quality but also what other countries are producing and the
steps they are being taken in reducing their emissions. Lastly, it was amazing to learn about the water
treaty between Mexico and the US that states that the US must allow halfa million tons of water south
over the Mexican border. I fear for the small towns close to the border that depend on that water now
that Trump is planning on building his wall. Everyone needs to do their part in planet conservation. One
of the first steps of being more environmentally sustainable is to share the knowledge of why it is
important to change andhow change can be made possible. It is not consciously thought about regularly
but conserving resources on a regular basis can go a long way; this is as easy as turning off lights in
rooms that are not being used in that moment or going one step further by being water conscious. To be
honest, before taking a shower I allow the water to run so the hot water can get from the boiler tothe
shower head – I also take the time to brush my teeth but there is still an excess of water. Best option
would be to collect that water to be used the next day for household cleaning purposes. What is also
receiving a recent push since the beginning of the year is buying locally; not only does it help the local
economy but also reduces one´s carbon footprint and the need to transport consumable goods long
distances or internationally. What I have managed to make a constant habit is turning off lights in
unused rooms, as well as making an effort of purchasing local products than from international
providers. What I need to make a stronger effort in complying with is my water usage and conservation
as I feel my current usage is resulting in a lot of water waste. Word Count: 717 ReferencesDoršner, K.
