Background of the Study

Action research is a teacher-initiated investigation, which seeks to increase the teacher’s understanding in terms of
teaching and learning activities. This research helps to bring about changes in the classroom practices and particularly
helps the teacher to become a researcher. Action research generally consists of the following four phases in practices.

They are:

(i) Planning
(ii) Implementation/ Action/ Intervention
(iii) Observation
(iv) Reflection

Action research is very important in teaching learning process. It reflects that the methods and techniques adopted by
the teacher are working well or not. It helps the teacher to become a researcher. Every teacher faces the various
problems or problems arise while carrying out teaching learning activities. It is teachers’ duty to find out the solution to
the problem and has to proceed teaching and learning processes in the classroom. If the school does not get the
expected results, we have the habit of blaming the teachers for the poor results or existing situations. To some extent, it
may be true. if the teacher is strongly devoted to his profession and commits to bring about positive changes in the
learning environment of the school, the school will improve the existing situation and provide quality education or
education as the demands of contemporary society. I haveattempted to carry out action research on the following topic.

Planning:

a) Identifying the Problem/ Statement of the Problem

About Ten Percent Students Run Away from School After Breaktime.

or

How can I decrease the number of students who run away from school?

b) Validation of the Problem:

Most students remain at school up to the sixth period, but a few students (about 10 percent) run away /play
truant after breaktime or the sixth period. Data were taken from students’ attendance book.
c) Probable causes related to the problem:
 Students feel hungry as they have to come to school from long distance.
 Lack of pleasant atmosphere in the schools.
 Extracurricular activities are not organized /conducted in the school time and again.
 Parents themselves call their children to come home early from the school to help them with their work
 Teachers are not devoted to their teaching profession.
 After break teachers go to class latenearly ten to fifteen minutes later than the scheduled time.
d) Main causesrelated to the problem:
Parents themselves call their children to come home early from school to help them with their work.
Ways to solve the existing situation in the school.
*Parents themselves have to provide tiffin /Khaja to their children.
*Organizing parents meeting to have a discussion regarding a particular problem.
*Making parents of those students aware about the importance of education.
*Providing counsel to the students who run away from school.
*Making students pay fine.
*New strategies adopted for intervention
*Calling the students roll again in the sixth or last period to find out students who run away from school.
*Students’ parents are called to have a discussion on the problem.
*Teachers are required to be punctual while going to class
*Making/creating pleasant atmosphere in the classroom and assigning homework according to the students
learning ability.
The above-mentioned strategies will be continued up to 2076-03-01 from the first of Jestha.
Plan implementation/intervention:
All the aforementioned activities strategies were strictly followed. Consequently about 95% of them who ran
away from school was found to have decreased when above mentioned new strategies were brought into
practice. After a few days , all the students stopped running away from school making various excuses too.
The following plan was used to stop students running away from school.

Duration of implantation of plan

S. N Activity/strategies From commence deadline note
1. Studentsroll was called in the 2076/02/01 2076/03/01 Students’ roll is
sixth and last period always called in
the sixth or last
period.
2. Teachers were punctualwhile always Always “ “ “
going to the class
3. Inviting parents to visit school As required After the “ “ “
publication of
result and as the
situation
demanded

Observation:

After the implementation of abovestrategies in the actual class situation, I found a great change in their regularity in
the classroom, they remained in the classroom form the first period to the last. They also took part in teaching
learning activities actively. Parents started to visit school.

I found the following results after the implementation of the plan

i)) All the students who ran away from school realized that their presence in their class is important and stayed till the
last period.

ii) It means the number of students who ran away from school has decreased. They stopped running away from
school.

Reflection:

I felt very happy and satisfied after the implementation of new strategies in the classroom. From this kind of effort in
teaching and learning activities. what I have come to know that the teacher can do a lot of things in the classroom for
the welfare of their students. In fact, teachers can make difference. Finally, I shared my new finding with my friends.
