Project: EEC421 - Electronic Instrumentation

This document outlines an electronics instrumentation project for a class. Students are to work in groups of two on developing circuits to address various industrial sensing and control problems. There are three project options provided that involve using sensors and comparators to control lights, motors, or fans based on temperature thresholds. The tasks involve selecting an appropriate sensor, calibrating it, designing a signal conditioning circuit with calculations, and demonstrating the working circuit to the lecturer. Students will be assessed individually based on their contribution and prototype presentation.

EEC421 – Electronic Instrumentation

Project
Due Date: 02nd Nov, 2020 (1pm during lab class) Total: 25 marks

During your industrial attachment, you were involved with a project team at one
of the industries in Fiji and was asked by your supervisor to work on one of the
following projects.
Select your group members and work on the specifications of one of the projects
as detailed below. You are to work in 2 members per group and should not be
working on the same project.

Problem #1
A sensor is used to turn on a light as dark falls and to turn off the light during the
day. Use a comparator circuit and a transistor as a switch to activate the relay
which will be turning on/off the light. [Hint: Use comparator reference voltage
(VREF = 2.5V).

Problem #2
A motor running one of the processes in the factory is extremely heating up due
to its continuous operation. You are required to switch off the motor at 40°C motor
temperature. Indicate the operator that the motor is on/off by using a comparator
circuit, transistor as a switch. [Hint: Use leds as indicators].

Problem #3
A sensor is required to automatically turn on and off a ceiling fan as the room
temperature goes above 20°C. Use a comparator circuit and a transistor as a
switch to activate the relay which will be turning on/off the fan. [Hint: Use led to
indicate fan is on/off].

Tasks:
1. Select the most appropriate sensor for your application noting the
specifications of the sensor and its availability (check the availability of the
different types with the technicians at the electronics stores in D302).
List the major specifications of the sensor/transducer that should be strictly
considered. (5 marks)
2. Calibrate your sensor so that you have a good accuracy with minimal error
at the output. (5 marks)
3. Draw the signal conditioning circuit to drive the actuator as per the
specifications of the project. Work out the major calculations required.
(5 marks)
4. Construct your circuit on a breadboard and demonstrate to your lecturer.
(10 marks)

Note: ALL group members are to contribute equally towards the progress of the project.
Every member has to be present during their prototype presentation. You will be assessed
individually. NO PROJECT REPORT REQUIRED – however, circuit and calculations
needs to be presented.
