Sample Problem Exam1 PDF

This document provides instructions and formulas for a physics exam. It states that the exam will last 110 minutes with no outside materials permitted. It provides potentially useful formulas and reminds students to read questions carefully and show all work. A sample multi-part problem is included about two runners on a circular track running in opposite directions at different constant speeds.

SAMPLE PROBLEM

PHYSICS 151
EXAM I
SEPTEMBER 28, 2011
You have 110 minutes (one class period) to complete this exam.
NO BOOKS, NO NOTES
Calculators are permitted, but only for performing calculations. Cell phones may not be used as
calculators. Databases of formulas or other stored information may not be used. Use of stored
information constitutes cheating and will be dealt with harshly!

Please assume, for the sake of this exam, unless otherwise told: there is no friction, there is no
air-resistance, the Earth is FLAT, and the strength of the Earth’s gravitational field near the
Earth's surface is 9.8 MKS units.
For your own sake, read each question carefully. Be sure that you answer the question that is
asked.

Problem NUMERICAL RELEVANT EQUATION(S) SCORE

ANSWER
1 a) t
200m
17.2 s v1  v 2
1 b) 106.6 m d  v fast  t  6.2
m
 17.2s
s
1 c)

For each problem, put the final numerical answer and the equation that led
to that number in the relevant boxes on the answer sheet. Please do show
as much work as possible on this sheet as it will be used to determine
partial credit if the submitted answers are incorrect.

Question 1: (xxx Points)

(This sample problem is from a Mastering Physics assignment that you have not yet
done.)

Two runners start simultaneously from the same point on a circular 200 m track
m
and run in opposite directions. One runs at a constant speed of 6.20 , and the other
s
m
runs at a constant speed of 5.40 .
s

a) When they first meet, for how long a time will they have been running?

b) When they first meet how far will fast runner have run along the track?

c) When they first meet how far will slow runner have run along the track?

(End of statement of problem. What follows is my work on it.)

Part (a):

v1t  200m  v2 t

so

200m
t  17.2s
v1  v2

2
Note that in this simple problem, either or both of the equations above would
be useful to put into the final answer box. Don’t go overboard with this!

For part (b):

Distance is speed times time, so

m
d  v fast  t  6.2  17.2s  106.6m
s
