1-1
What is JDF Parser?
JDF Parser is software that is used with JDF compatible applications, and is installed as a MEAP
application on a Canon printer. JDF Parser parses work instructions (written in the JDF (Job Definition
Format) format) that are sent with print data when sending a print job, and then executes the print
job following those instructions.

JDF Parser Features

The Job Definition Format (JDF) is an XML-based data format standard for work instructions. This
standard was proposed by the International Cooperation for the Integration of Processes in Prepress,
Press and Postpress (CIP4) to automate and streamline print processes by establishing a system for
managing every part of the process in accordance with a shared standard. You can use this common
data format (JDF) to create instructions for all print-related processes to improve productivity.

How JDF Parser Works

JDF Parser is software which parses JDF files and executes print jobs. The JDF Parser module, which
supports JDF, is installed as a MEAP application in the print controller.

1-2 What is JDF Parser?

When print data, defined by a JDF file is submitted to the printer, JDF Parser interprets the JDF file and
processes the data based on the specified job properties.

NOTE
••A data unit transmitted to the JDF printer is called a “job.”

Functionality of a System on Which JDF Parser Is
Installed
This section describes the key system features available when using a Canon printer with JDF Parser
installed. (See “How JDF Parser Works,” on p. 1-2) Basic features such as the paper specification,
bookbinding and finishing features are not described in this section.

NOTE
••In general, you can use JDF compatible applications to configure or change the settings for
these features. For detail information on each individual application, see the appropriate
manual.
••Also, if you have any question about JDF compatible applications that support JDF Parser,
please contact the sales personnel or the retail store where you purchased this product.

Exceptional Page Setting Feature

You can use the Exceptional Page Setting option to configure some settings only for one or more
selected pages within a document.
The settings that can be specified using this feature are as follows:
••Divide a job into different groups of pages and set properties for each group
••For selected pages in a job, configure properties different from those specified for the entire job
••Merge several jobs into one, and set properties as a single job.

NOTE
••The properties configured for a page or page range using the Exceptional Page Setting feature,
override the property settings for the entire job.
••If a range is defined for the property exceptions that are set and no properties are specified (or
the specified property is invalid), JDF Parser uses the properties configured for the entire job.
••Some of the print setting items are not enabled when the Exceptional Page setting is
configured.

Page Layout Settings

You can select page layout options, including imposition layout for image data, for each page
generated by PDL. Page layout is created based on the properties defined in the JDF file.

JMF Function
The Job Messaging Format (JMF) is a communication (command/event) -related specification defined
in the JDF specifications. The JDF specifications mainly define the JDF schema as a job ticket, and also
define a communication-related specification called JMF, which is used to control devices connected
to workflows according to an integrated command structure. JMF provides functions that enable you
to submit jobs and retrieve various information from devices.

Job Holding Feature

Job Holding enables temporary storage of a submitted job in the printer’s hold queue without
printing it. You can specify the use of the Job Holding feature as a JMF command.

CHAPTER

Restrictions....................................................................................................................................3-2
Glossary.........................................................................................................................................3-5
Index..............................................................................................................................................3-9

3-1
Restrictions
There are some restrictions when working with JDF Parser.

Maximum number of concurrent jobs

The maximum number of JDF jobs (including held jobs) is 50.
For JDF jobs and PDL print jobs, up to 100 jobs (including held jobs) can be executed concurrently.
If PDL print jobs have already been submitted, the number of possible JDF jobs should satisfy the
condition in which the number is more than the result of 100 minus the number of submitted PDL
print jobs and not more than 50.

The number of valid sessions (Sending jobs to JDF Parser)

Up to four sessions are supported.
If four sessions are running and a new session request is made, an error occurs, and the sessions are
disconnected.

The number of job partitions in a job

Up to 400 job partitions are allowed in a job. The system also allows up to 400 partitions.
If a job containing more than one partition is being processed and a subsequent job is submitted,
the total number of partitions may exceed the limit, even if the subsequent job has fewer than 400
partitions. The subsequent job will not be canceled because JDF processing for the subsequent job is
in wait condition until processing of the preceding job ends as far as the number of partition used per
job does not exceed 400.

3-2 Restrictions
Restrictions on using MEAP authentication services
••Whichever user submits a job, the job is always submitted based on the authentication
information that is set for JDF Parser. (Even users who are restricted regarding PDL printing can
execute JDF jobs.)
