THE PROBLEM
Garbage is an unwanted waste material. It is the stuff we don’t need any
more. Everyday we make tons of solid waste. It makes our environment unhealthy.
Any waste material like cans, bottles, paper, kitchen waste and plastic bags are
called garbage. There are things which can be reused, but we throw them away.
Nowadays, one of the problems that our community faces is the improper
waste disposal. As a matter of fact, Barangay Palahanan 2nd was listed as one of
the top 5 barangays in the municipality of San Juan with poor waste management.
The ones who are responsible in this kind of problem are the entire residents
in our community including the municipal and barangay officials, every family, the
school, local organizations, as well as us, the youths. This problem teaches us that
our garbage is our responsibility. Each one of us must be responsible for our own
garbage. At home we must manage our own garbage. We must separate
biodegradable garbage from non-biodegradable garbage. The cities and towns must
have highly advanced garbage treatment and recycling plants to preserve the beauty
and purity of our environment.
ACTIONS/SOLUTIONS
First of all, as youths, we can tell our parents, neighbors and classmates
about reducing the amount of garbage they throw away. We can collect all the things
which can be recycled, like cans, paper, plastic bags and bottles. Before we throw
the things away, first look for what we can reuse and then look for what we can
recycle and then leave the rest as garbage.
For waste reduction, avoid disposable things. We should not use too much
paper towels and bathroom tissue. Use cloth towel instead. Cloth bags can be used
for shopping. We can also refill water bottles, use both sides of paper and share
magazines with others.
Landfills are also an answer for garbage disposal. We can sell reusable bags
back to the shop because it is bad to use so much plastic. We should cut down the
garbage we make by not throwing unnecessary things. We can hold a yard sale.
So we should always keep in mind that to keep our home and neighborhoods
nice and clean and for healthy environment we need to remember and follow all
these.

PROCESS OF OUR ACTIONS/SOLUTIONS

When you are looking for solutions for waste disposal, there are a lot of
different things that you can do. It really depends on what kind of waste you are
trying to dispose, and there are going to be different ways to do so based on what it
is you are getting rid of.
A. Compost Your Waste
Composting waste is an option for getting rid of your household waste.
You can compost lots of items: food waste, animal waste, yard waste, and
much more. Basically, anything that is organic can be composted and will
break down into rich compost that can be used for a variety of things. For
example, people use their compost for fertilizer for their lawns and plants. Be
sure that if you are going to compost, you build a compost bin because it is a
process that does take some time.
B. Recycling
Recycling waste is another option for getting rid of waste. There are
many different things that are recyclable: paper, tin, aluminum, plastic, and
much more. A lot of people aren't aware of all the different things that they can
recycle, and many do the obvious, which is paper and aluminum. If you are
using a trash service company, ask them if they can help you set up the
recycling bins. You can also find a recycling center that is near you and drop
the waste off.
C. Buy Products that are Good for the Environment
Instead of purchasing those plastic pop bottles, find a way that you can
buy things that are more environmentally friendly. When you cut down on the
waste that you created, you will cut down on the needs for waste disposal,
and this is a great solution. There are a lot of products that are compostable,
or products that used recycled materials. Some of these items include bottle
openers, calendars, coloring books, and much more. Just by purchasing
these products, you can do so much.
