Singeing
Singeing: The process by which loose hairy fibers, protruding fiber, floating or projecting
fibers are burned off from the surface of the fabric is called singeing.

Objects:
 To remove loose hairy fibers.
 In order to impart a clearly defined and sharp design to the cloth in printing.
 To obtain smooth surface.

Types of singeing machine:

1. Plate singeing machine
2. Roller singeing machine
3. Gas singeing machine

Plate singeing machine consists of two curved copper plate 1-2” thick and suitable heating
arrangement. The open width cloth passes over and in contact with the hot plate at a speed
varying between 135-225 m/min. The protruding fibers are burnt during the passes of the
cloth. Fibers are present in the interstiches of warp and wefts are not singed. Temperature
can’t be maintained uniformly in this machine. But certain of luster produced in the cloth due
to friction. Normally 750 degree Celsius temperature is used in plate singeing m/c.

Advantages:
 Very suitable for back filter in finishing process.
 Lusture is produce due to friction between fabric & hot place.
 Uniform singeing.

Disadvantage:
 Only one side singed
 Difficult to maintain temperature.
 Not singed in stitch portion.

2. Roller singeing machine

In this machine the singeing surface is a rotating cylinder. The fabric passes in contact with
the hot cylinder. The rotation of the cylinder is in opposite direction to the fabric movement
which raises the nap, ensuring efficient singeing. The fiber ends in the interstiches are not
removed from the fabric and luster produced as plate singeing machine due to friction.

Advantages:
 Surface temp. is more uniform than plate singeing m/c.
 Uniform singeing.
 Lusture increase.

Disadvantages:
 Only one side singed
 Due to over use, small tinny groove created on the cylinder

3. Gas singeing machine:

This machine essentially consists of one or more burners giving vertical flames. The flame
issues from a narrow slit, which are adjustable with respect to width and thickness. When the
cloth is pass over the flame at a high speed, the flame burns protruding fiber without
damaging the fabric.

The fiber ends present in the interstices of the warp and weft are also singed. The singed
fabric passes into a water box, so that all the sparks are extinguished. A hood and a fan are
provided over the machine. Both surface of the cloth are singed by this machine.

Advantages:
 Both side of the fabric can be singed.
 Uniform temperature.
 Fiber ends present in the interstices of warp and weft are singed.

Disadvantages:
 Dirty burner can produce spot on the fabric.
 Lusture are not possible.

Care should be taken on gas singeing machine:

1. Fabric must be free from ZnCl₂, MgCl₂ i.e anti mildew agent which may liberate an acid
(HCl) and tender the cotton cloth by formation of hydrocellulose.

2. Fabric must be evenly dried before singeing.

3. All components of the machine should be cleaned.

4. Flame should be effective.

5. Uniform speed of the fabric should be controlled.

6. Synthetic blend fabric should operate carefully.
