UNIT 1

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CONCEPTS

At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:


 ·Discuss the importance of Physical Education.
· Explain the objectives of Physical Education.
· Identify activities enhancing the physical, social, mental, emotional aspects of
an Individual.
· Participate actively in class discussion.

Introduction
Modern technology has lessened the physical demands of everyday
activities like cleaning the house, washing the dishes and clothes, carrying pail
of water, scrubbing the floor and the like. These activities demand time to be
accomplished. Chores that once required long hours of physical activities can
now be accomplished in just a few seconds by simply pushing a button or
settling a dial. As a result, more free time is utilized for other activities.
Unfortunately, many individuals have acquired a sedentary or inactive lifestyle
leading to some disease like hypertension, muscular- skeletal disorders such
as osteoporosis and obesity.
To promote a healthy lifestyle among individuals, the DepEd and Ched
emphasize physical education from Pre School to Tertiary levels. The course
promotes the utilization of the learning medium of large muscle activities
through play or movement exploration setting such as organized sports,
gymnastics, dance, aquatics, and calisthenics. Physical Education aims to
develop student’s skills and good habits and to assist them into becoming
skilled, smart, happy, competent and intelligent individuals.
Physical Education refers to the enhancement of the individuals’ growth
and development through total body movements. The informal nature of the
 activities in a physical education class provides relaxation and relief from
strain and tension, physical education activities teach students to work as a
part of a
Team or as individuals in a wide variety of play like and competitive
activities. It provides opportunities for socialization as well as for the
development of mental capabilities of individuals. In general, Physical
Education is teaching proper body movement to develop the four aspects of
life.

MEANING OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION


Physical Education came from the latin words “physica” which means
physics and “educatio” which means the training of the bodily organs and
powers with a view to the promotion of hearts and vigor.
Physical Education is an integral part of the educational program designed
to promote the optimum development of an individual physically, mentally,
socially, and emotionally through total body movement in the performance of
properly selected physical activities.
Physical Education is an educational process that aims to improve the
performance and enhancement of human development physically, mentally,
emotionally and socially through properly selected physical activities. Physical
Education does not focus only on the development and outcomes of varied
activities but also on the development and acquisition of knowledge and
attitudes necessary for lifelong learning and lifespan participation. Moreover, it
is also concerned with the promotion of active lifestyle for people of all ages.
Through active participation in the properly selected physical education
activities, students will develop good health and maintain their high level of
physical fitness that enable s them to enjoy good life.
