ME681A: Assignment 5 (Based On Week 8 and Week 9 Lectures) : Due On 8th Nov. 2020

This document provides 15 questions related to ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The questions cover a range of topics including: solving first and second order linear ODEs; determining the behavior of solutions as t approaches infinity; finding general and specific solutions that satisfy given initial conditions; determining if solutions are linearly independent or dependent; and verifying or finding solutions to ODEs. The questions progress from simpler to more complex ODEs and require skills like computing integrating factors, solving exact ODEs, and solving initial value problems.

lectures)
Due on 8th Nov. 2020

Question 1. Consider the equation: Ly 0 + Ry = E, where L, R, and E are positive con-

stants.
(a) Solve the equation.
(b) Find the solution satisfying y(0) = y0 , where y0 is a given positive constant.
(c) Sketch a graph of the solution given in (b) for the case y0 > E/R.
(d) Show that every solution y(t) tends to E/R as t → ∞.

Question 2. Consider the equation t2 y 0 + 2ty = 1 on 0 < t < ∞.

(a) Show that every solution tends to zero as t → ∞.
(b) Find that solution φ which satisfies φ(2) = 2φ(1).

Question 3. Find all the solutions of the equation y 0 + 2y = b(t), (−∞ < t < ∞), where
b(t) = 1 − |t| for |t| ≤ 1, and b(t) = 0 for |t| > 1.

Question 4. Find all the real-valued solutions of the equation y 0 = t2 y 2 − 4t2 .

Question 5. Can the ODE

a1 t + b 1 y + c 1
y0 = ,
a2 t + b 2 y + c 2
where a1 , b1 , c1 , a2 , b2 , c2 are constants (c1 , c2 not both 0), be reduced to a separable form? If
yes, how?

Question 6. Solve the ODE

5t3 y 2 + 2y
y0 = −
3t4 y + 2t
by first finding the integrating factor to convert it into an exact ODE.

Question 7. Consider the ODE

y 0 = f (t)p(cos y) + g(t)q(sin y),

where f, g are continuous for all real t, and p, q are polynomials. Show that every initial
value problem for this equation has a solution which exists for all real t.

Question 8. Determine whether the initial value problem y 0 = cos(t + y), y(t0 ) = y0 , has a
unique solution defined on all of R.

Question 9. Find the general solution of the differential equation ty 0 = 2y − t. Sketch sev-
eral specific solutions from this general solution. Show that there is no solution satisfying the
initial condition y(0) = 2. Why does this not contradict Picard’s existence and uniqueness
theorem?

of (a).
(c) Sketch the solution satisfying y(0) = 1, y 0 (0) = 0 in the case (iii).
(d) Show that any solution in case (iii) may be written in the form y(t) = Aeαt cos(βt−ω),
where A, α, β, ω are constants. Determine α, β.

whether they are linearly independent or dependent over this domain.
