Preliminary
I am Nisrina Afifah from Accounting Department of Andalas University, has been held an
observation in a sanctuary of mangrove located in Pariaman, West Sumatra. This observation held at
10:00 AM – 01:00 PM on Saturday, May 5, 2018. First of all, let me explain what is actually mangrove
is ?

Mangrove is a shrub or small tree that grows in coastal saline or brackish water. Mangroves
are salt-tolerant trees, also called halophytes, and are adapted to life in harsh coastal conditions.
They contain a complex salt filtration system and complex root system to cope with salt water
immersion and wave action. They are adapted to the low oxygen (anoxic) conditions of waterlogged
mud.

From the sentences above, it seems like mangrove has several variety, but it will explain
later on the following section. Later, it triggered question, “why mangrove are being cultivated and
even protected ?”. Many such a kind of this question appear in my head that i’ve been composed
into a questionaire, then find the answer in mangrove conservation, Pariaman.

The question, answer, and explanation that i already collect will be the main content of this
paper. The aim is to provide information about mangrove and especially mangrove conservation of
Pariaman, including its background of establishment, characteristics, function, until the utilization of
mangrove. Also, as a marking object on my Natural Science Basic subject.

Now, enjoyed to continue to the main section of this paper.

Note : The following question was asked to one of the founders of the Pariaman’s Mangrove
Conservation, as well as a person who cultivated and proteect the mangrove.
1. History of Pariaman’s Mangrove Conservation establishment

The question i ask to the interviewee is “since when this sanctuary was founded?”.
The answer is :
This conservation cites are actually begin by a local diving club, named Tabuik Diving
Club. Because mayor activity of it’s group are done at sea, thus they are committed to
protecting the environment and the marine ecosystem from damage.
On 2011, they start to establish the Mangrove Conservation in Pariaman (origin
district of TDC). In response of diminishing of the mangrove existence in allover the
world.

2. The Reason why Mangrove are Preserved

Question : What is the beneficial purpose of mangrove for environment ?
Answer : Here are the benefits of mangrove for the environment :
1. Preventing coastal abrasion
Mangrove forest deposits mud in the roots of mangrove trees. This is
useful to prevent the intrusion of sea water into the mainland.
2. Being a natural filter for the sea
Roots and mud in the mangrove environment speed up the decomposition
process.
3. Provide a Plant and Animal Conservation Site
Several species of plants and animals are only suitable for living in
mangroves. Mangrove forests are suitable residence for many animals
such as monitor lizards, turtles, monkeys, birds, snakes, and so forth.
Several types of marine animals also inhabit many mangrove forests such
as fish, shrimp, crabs, slugs, and so forth.
4. Supporting the Marine Ecosystem
The presence of mangroves affects not only coastal ecosystems but also
marine ecosystems. Mangrove forest destruction has been shown to
reduce the number of fish and other marine animals that are in the sea
close to the mangrove forests. How many types of aquatic animals such as
shrimp, crab, etc. utilize mangrove forests as a place to find food.

3. Type of mangrove and its product utilization for the welfare of the surrounding
community
Question : what kind of mangrove that lives in this sanctuary? Are there any mangrove
products that are economically valuable to the local people? how to manage it?
Answer :
 Type of Mangrove
 Rizophora Mucronata Lam.
 Rizophora Apiculate Blume
 Sonneratia Caseolaris (L.) Engl.
 Dolichandrone Spathacea (L.F.) Baill ex K.Schum
 Calophyllum Inophyllum L.
 Nypa Fruticans Wumb
 Acanthus Ilicifulius L.
 Hibiscus Tiliaceus L.

Two picture above ara information banner at the area of mangrove contains several types of
mangrove that exist in this conservation cites.
 Product Utilization
So far, the utilization of mangrove is still focused on the tourism sector.
related to the relatively small number and extent of mangrove plants, has not
produced much commodity yet.
Moreover, most of mangrove products are in the form of timber, that can
potentially overexploited which can damage the mangrove conservation cites.
But, there is one kind of mangrove that produce fruit that safe to eat, and can
be processed into syrup. That is Sonneratia Caseolaris (L.) Engl., which
utilization is still in the planning stage.
However, the local people are free to use the mangroves for their household
needs.

4. Animals that live in the mangrove environment

Question : what kind of animal that live in this cites ?
Answer : There is several animal that live here. They are :
 Mudskipper (Periophthalmus sp)

 Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus sp)

 Tree-Climbing Crab (Episesarma sp)

(p.s : photos above are not from my observation in Pariaman,
because i fail to find any animal)

5. How to breed mangroves, and it’s struggles

Question : How to breed mangroves, and what are the difficulties/ struggles?
Answer : Mangrove seeds that from Mandeh/ Bengkalis/ Sungai Pinang grown in plastic
pots until reach certain number of leaves then, directly transferred to the mangrove
swamp. After that, regular monitoring activities are carried out.
The struggle is when seeds are destroyed by local people’s cattles. That’s why, seeds
are require more attention to keep it grown well.

6. How the Development of Mangrove Conservation and it’s Future Plan
Question : How you develop this cites, from where you fund the operational activity ?
what is your plan for this cites?
Answer : In the beginning of this establishment, this conservation cites are fund by
Tabuik Diving Club member as “swadaya”. But, since December, 2017, Pertamina in
collaboratin with local government agreed to build facilities and infrastructure, and
make this sanctuary as an object of tourism in pariaman. since then the cost of funding
operational activities borne by pertamina, and there are special regulations regarding
the preservation of this place by local government.
The vision of this Mangrove conservation are to change the mondset of local people,
to not to overexploited mangrove timber. In the short term the management team will
try to develop mangrove syrup products in order to become a typical drink of coastal
mangrov conservation area.
