Reliable system design requires some form of ESD
protection. Although several types of transient protec-
tion devices are available, care must be taken when
deciding which device to use. An ill-chosen device will
not only be ineffective, but can interfere with the
normal operation of the circuit. For suppression of
transients in portable systems, the protection device
must provide the following characteristics:

l Extremely fast response time


l Low clamping and operating voltages
