Assignment#1: Short Comment (5-Marks) : Advanced Structural Design of Concrete Structures MSTR505

This document outlines assignments for an Advanced Structural Design of Concrete Structures course. It includes: 1. A short comment assignment with 5 questions related to code specifications for neutral axis depth, shear reinforcement requirements, serviceability limit states, and ultimate limit states. 2. An informative article assignment requiring students to write short but detailed articles on design philosophies of reinforced concrete structures, partial safety factors for materials and loads according to different codes, a literature review on steel reinforcement in Nepal, and a literature review on concrete as a material in reinforced concrete elements. 3. Information about the course instructor and contact details.

Advanced Structural Design of Concrete Structures MSTR505

Assume necessary data as per requirement
Download available books related to RC and Advanced RC design and codes IS 456:2000, SP-
16, SP-22, SP34-1987, SP 24-1983, ACI 318-05, ACI 318R-14 etc. for your reference

Assignment#1: Short comment (5-Marks)

Date of assignment: 10th Aug, 2020 Submission date: 17th August, 2020
Basic conceptual approach: give short and suit answer/comment
1. Justify the code specification for the limiting neutral axis depth in Limit State Design?
2. Why do specifications state that at least 50% of the shear to be carried by steel should be in
the form of stirrups?
3. Write briefly about the limit state of serviceability?
4. Write briefly about ultimate limit state?
5. Inclined stirrups and bent up bars are considered suitable for shear reinforcement but not
torsional reinforcement, why?

Assignment#2: Prepare informative article (10-Marks)

Date of assignment: 10th Aug, 2020 Submission date: 17th August, 2020
Prepare a short but elaborative article on the following titles. Write the answer in article form.
Give proper citations and reference to the taken data, figure, table etc. if any.

1. Do review of Design philosophies of RC structures. (Hint: Explain basic root things related
to different design approach include mathematical expressions also as per requirement)
2. Give expression of partial safety factors for different materials like concrete, steel, and for
different loads. (Hint: write as per different codes like IS 45:2000, Euro code, ACI etc.)
3. Do literature review on steel as reinforcement in Nepal? (Hint: focus on history of rebar,
stress strain part, yield and ultimate strength part, available size and brands etc.)
4. Do literature review on concrete as material in RC elements? (Hint: Focus on grade, stress
strain relationship, modulus of elasticity etc.)
